___________________________________________________________________________________________

Today, we’re talking about Showing Up Consistently To Your Business, Specifically The Marketing In Your Business, because when you show up consistently, you’ll be able to help more people, sign more clients and increase your revenue.

And this is from a place of not shaming yourself for not showing up consistently in the past, even though you showed up consistently for client calls and client sessions. This is not to shame and blame you. This is also not from the place of forcing or shooting.

This is from a sustainable fuel source, because I know if you’re not showing up consistently, for example, to Instagram or social media, it’s probably not because you’re lazy or disorganized. It’s because you’re relying on the wrong fuel source.

Did you know that 67% of wellness practitioners report feeling guilty about their inconsistent marketing? That is a huge energy leak. Yet those same practitioners show up reliably for their clients day after day, even if they do feel exhausted or life circumstances are happening. The difference isn’t discipline, it’s desire.

So today we’re unpacking why consistency in your business, especially the marketing, feels impossibly hard at times and how shifting from willpower or forcing to genuine desire will not only transform just your marketing, but the entire relationship with your business, so you’re a dedicated wellness practitioner, maybe a physical therapist, a yoga teacher, a massage therapist, or a health coach, or a combination of them above and or additional certifications like Reiki practitioner or healer. You show up consistently for your clients, pouring in all this expertise in your heart and helping them to transform.

But when it comes to marketing your business, that’s where the consistency really breaks down. You experience this cycle, you get motivated after a slow month and you create a burst of content and you see some results and then life happens. Maybe you get busy with your client sessions or a new studio asked you to a couple of new classes or your busy client schedule has now become even busier because client sessions are running over. On top of that, family maybe needs your attention.

And suddenly it’s been two weeks since your last Instagram post and that workshop you really wanted to promote, it’s not as full as you want it to be because the dates are in just a couple of days and you really haven’t announced it yet.

This plays out all the time. I see this happening to so many practitioners.

Some Patterns I See With Many Practitioners

Here’s some patterns that I see happen. You set aside time to batch content on Sunday, but you’re so exhausted from your client week that you just can’t bring yourself to create or you just want to spend time with your family. I highly recommend if you want to take weekends off, do not make weekends part of your content creation batching time.

Or you start creating a reel, but you’re halfway through and then you get caught in perfectionism or imposter syndrome and you end up abandoning it to your drafts and never posting it. And then now you’ve run out of time. So you move on to the next client session.

And then even worse, you carry around that constant guilt about your lack of marketing. And then you start to wonder if you’re cut out for entrepreneurship. You compare yourself to others in the field who seem to post effortlessly and all the time and are getting a lot of traction and engagement.

But here’s what most business coaches won’t tell you. The problem isn’t your willpower or discipline or time management. The problem is that you’re trying to force consistency through willpower alone with strategies that don’t resonate with you instead of creating a genuine desire for the marketing process.

Willpower is like a muscle that fatigues with use. No matter how disciplined you are, relying on willpower alone is a recipe for burnout and inconsistency. And you know this. Think about your clients who don’t implement their homework, their exercises, or they’re forcing themselves not to eat those desired sweet treats. It may work a couple of times, but for the long run, it doesn’t usually last. It’s not sustainable.

So the solution isn’t creating another content calendar that you don’t stick to and then beat yourself up because of that. It’s for sure not hiring a social media manager because if you don’t know how to create the content that engages and grows your audience, you won’t be able to train someone else and it is literally money wasted down the drain.

You need a marketing method that is in alignment with you and creates the desire.

So my client Joe, he’s on the blog a couple of times and you can scroll back to read those blogs. But when he first started working with me, he really hated marketing and because of that, he didn’t show up consistently. And we had to change that fuel from forcing to now creating a desire similar to him.

This is what worked for me. It’s figuring out the marketing method that is in alignment that fuels your creativity, connection and service to others. And that creates desire. So you do show up consistently. And that is what I teach in the 100K Marketing Message Framework.

Unlike other generic marketing advice that tells you to just post more consistently, this method works with your nervous system and natural energetic rhythms rather than against them.

The Three Components of The Marketing Method

There’s three main components to this system. The first is alignment, creating marketing that feels congruent with who are and how you naturally communicate and the passion, bringing all your skillset and expertise into your content.

It’s also resonance, focusing on connection, service and impact rather than metrics or formulas. However, you do want to use those insights and metrics, but that is data to help further fuel that connection and service rather than using those numbers again, to beat yourself up.

And the third part is momentum and that is building systems that create energetic momentum rather than resistance.

When wellness practitioners implement this desire-based approach, they not only market more consistently, but they also attract higher quality clients and experience greater fulfillment in their work.

Because here’s the truth. If you don’t want to market at all, this is going to be hard to hear, right? But if you don’t want to market at all, if you don’t want to sell your services at all, but you want to get paid consistently, that is called being an employee. It’s having a job. It’s going to the work, doing the client work, getting a paycheck, and not doing all that additional work outside of client sessions.

What creates entrepreneurship is the ability to market and sell your services and you having to be the one how to learn to do that and actually do that outside of your client sessions. And it’s remembering that as an entrepreneur, you create so much freedom and flexibility and purpose in your business that often you can’t do in a mill job.

My Experiences with Marketing and How My Understanding With It Evolved Overtime

I, for sure, when I had no desire to become an entrepreneur, no desire at all, because I had two parents that I actually, one of my first jobs, I was a gymnastics coach, but then also I was marketing assistant for both my parents, which included stuffing envelopes, going on door to door and knocking, handing out flyers, that sort of thing. You know, gosh, how long ago was that? 30 plus years ago, social media wasn’t around.

So marketing looked a little bit different. Definitely the traditional boots on the ground. I also saw my parents working weekends and working evenings. And so I just told myself, “I’m just going to go get a job, so when I have a family, I can actually see them and bring home a steady speed paycheck and not have all this worry and anxiety about money.” And I felt very strongly about that.

But what turned my mind, what changed my perspective was working in all these mill scenarios, first working in a mill scenario as a massage therapist. There were a few of them. Then I got hired on as a traditional physical therapist and mill scenarios there and going through mill scenarios while I was interning in physical therapy school. And when I brought yoga into the mix as well, it was kind of a mill scenario teaching these classes back to back and workshops and trainings on the weekends. That became a mill scenario going from studio to studio.

And I found that when I have the most passion for my business, the most freedom and the most flexibility is when I actually lean into the growth edge of overcoming my imposter syndrome, overcoming my freeze response when it comes to marketing and starting to view marketing as not another chore or a labor that I have to do that I hate.

Instead, looking at it as a way to fuel my creative outlets and speak to my audience on all the variety of messages that I want to share with them and educate them on. And it also becomes service and a place of connection. And that allows me to show up consistently to my audience.

In fact, a couple months ago, during a launch, I sent out an e-mail a day to my e-mail list. And that was a lot. And I got a lot of positive feedback on that a lot of people replying to the e-mails saying, “Thank you so much, I needed to hear this today,” or, “This e-mail helped me so much,” or just starting conversations with a lot of people on my e-mail list.

And I got a lot of questions from my clients who are also on my e-mail list being like, “Alison, how did you do that? That seemed like a lot of work.” And it was, but it didn’t take a lot of extra time. In fact, it didn’t take any extra time. I just fit it into my schedule and I created an efficient system using AI. And I envisioned this as a place of connection and again, creativity outlet for connecting with my audience. And I imagined it was like the body, my body of work. It was like I was writing a book and each e-mail that I sent out was like a page in the book. And so my clients were just turning page after page through my e-mails and getting value where each page contained a tip or an insight or a perspective shift or a client case story to inspire them.

And because I did go in with this mindset, it did fuel that connection and service with my audience. And it created a lot of new clients. Plus, when those clients showed up to consultation calls, they were ready to work with me. There was less hesitation. There was less doubt and they were more prepared and ready to move forward.

The Changes That Will Happen When You Begin Implementing The Marketing Method

So when you begin to implement this consistency from desire, you’ll experience what I call marketing peace– that constant background anxiety about not being visible enough, it dissolves when your marketing becomes something you generally look forward to.

Second, your conversion rates will naturally improve when you create content from your desire rather than an obligation. You know how to highlight your expertise and your story. You’re authentic and you resonate with your audience. Content created in this state receives a higher engagement rate than average and more consultations booked with people that are your right fit and ready to work with you.

And third, you’ll build a sustainable visibility rhythm that creates trust with your audience instead of that feast and famine cycle that happens because you’re hungry and really needing clients and then you get really busy so you don’t have time to market and you fall off.

Fourth, you’ll save enormous amount of mental and emotional energy. That constant guilt about inconsistent marketing is more of a drain than you realize. So when marketing becomes more desire-based, that energy becomes available for your client work and self-care.

And finally, experience more joy in your business. Marketing stops being a dreaded task and becomes a creative expression of your mission. Imagine finishing your content creation sessions feeling energized rather than depleted. And this is what becomes possible with desire-based consistency.

Three Focus Strategies to Implement Desired-Based Consistency

Okay, so let’s get practical. If you’re thinking, Alison, well, how do I do this? Here are three focus strategies to implement desired-based consistency into your wellness business.

Number one, identify your energetic marketing style. So not everyone thrives with the same content creation approach. There are four primary energetic marketing styles that I’ve seen. There’s the flow creator that’s energized by spontaneity and in-the-moment inspiration. There’s the structured builder that thrives with that content calendar and clear plans and systems. There’s the connection catalyst who comes alive in conversation and interaction, especially in the DMs. There’s the vision keeper who’s motivated by seeing the big picture. So where do you see yourself in this? And it’s not black or white. There might be some hybrid styles. But the key is to identify which style naturally energizes you.

So for example, if you’re the flow creator, don’t force yourself into rigid content calendars. That is me. I am the flow creator. Content calendars do not work for me at all. I’ve tried so many times. Instead, create flexible frameworks you can fill in when the inspiration strikes. And it’s learning how to create the inspiration for yourself so you know what to post and what to stay on those days when you don’t feel inspired. This is huge.

Strategy two is create problem-aware content framework. And this is speaking to your ideal client’s problems so they become more aware about them and aware of how you can be the solution to them. And it connects directly with your ideal client’s language.

And so in a simplified framework, for example, you want to have a hook that highlights a pain point your client is experiencing or a compelling subject line, if it’s an e-mail, you want to speak about their experience in their day to day. What is actually happening? Go deep. What are they feeling about that situation? Then you want to introduce a perspective shift, show what they believe versus what the actual problem is. Then you want to introduce the solution.

So introduce your approach and then have a call to action. And if it’s a growth style reel, that call to action might just be to follow you or save it. Or if it’s an e-mail, you might say book a consultation. There’s many different types of call to actions, but having this framework makes content creation seem less overwhelming because you’re not starting from scratch each time.

And strategy three is using the hero’s journey for Instagram stories. So if you’re struggling with what to post on stories, here’s another framework you can share where you were before your pain point, what happened that made you realize change was needed, the action you took in response, what you learned, the results you achieved, how you help others now and a clear call to action. Or you can speak to the client’s hero journey, speaking to where they were prior to hiring you, what you did together and then results achieved. And if you have social proof, like showing a screenshot of a testimonial, you can add that as well.

Conclusion

If you feel like you’ve tried everything and can’t stay consistent with marketing, the key difference in this approach is that you’re not trying to force consistency through peer discipline.

The desired based approach works with your brain’s natural reward systems rather than against them. If you don’t feel like you have time for marketing because you’re already seeing clients back to back, this is exactly why the desired based approach is so crucial. When marketing becomes something you want to do rather than you have to do, you naturally find time and protect for it.

So for example, with a good percentage of my clients, the first thing we do is block off an hour in their calendar or two hours, depending on how much content they want to create in one week consistently, and then we block that off. And then the work comes, the coaching actually begins often at that point because more often than not, that time slot is missed, overlooked or rescheduled and booked. And then the coaching becomes, “Why did that happen?”

And often I find that it’s because there’s some type of block hindering that desire, whether it’s imposter syndrome, not knowing what to say, overwhelm, or some type of free response. But when we release that and shift to desire and what fuels them, that connection, that service, then they do show up consistently to their marketing, especially when you have a marketing system that works with your strength and your aligned way that you want to show up.

So for example, if you despise Instagram, but you love e-mail marketing, so spend more time there and just make your Instagram channel relevant to you, especially if you’re a brick and mortar. But if you’re wanting to really grow an online audience and you like Instagram, you just want to figure out how to tap into it and optimize it. And you’re not so familiar with emails, then go all in on Instagram and make emails secondary.

The key is to learn more about you and how you work, what lights you up in terms of the format of where to show up consistently and how to show up consistently. And then it’s knowing what to say, even if you don’t feel inspired. And when you do that, you will be able to show up consistently, in a sustainable way.

So there you have it, ways to shift from forcing, shitting, and shame, guilt, to now having desire for marketing. So you can have that business that you’ve always wanted and not be forced to work in a mill where you just are not able to treat your clients and patients the way that you desire. And you’re not taking home the paycheck that you’re really wanting either. All right, you’ve got this.

Discover the 4 Types of Social Media Content That Convert

Hi, I'm Dr. Alison McLean, DPT

I believe wellness practitioners deserve to live the freedom they teach.

Not someday. Not after one more certification or one more full caseload. Now. We entered this work to help people heal — and somewhere along the way, we became the most burned out people in the room. Seeing clients back to back, skipping meals, missing family moments, quietly wondering if this is as good as it gets. What they didn't teach us in school is that the business model we inherited was never designed to give us freedom. It was designed to keep us busy. There's a version of your practice that doesn't require your sacrifice as the cost of admission. One where your income isn't capped by your calendar, your clients get your best, and you actually have a life outside the treatment room.

That's the world I'm building — and I'd love to help you build it too.
