Hey there, wellness entrepreneur. Welcome back!
In today’s blog, we’re talking about all the challenges, the real challenges of building a successful online wellness business. So today is more of a mindset, especially if you want to transition from a clinical practice, meaning you’re working as an employee for someone else and you want to start building your online program and you don’t want to do a brick and mortar style. You want to go from an employee in a clinic to having your own business 100% online.
Or if you have an existing brick and mortar and you want to add an online program to your suite of offers or how you work with people, this blog will apply to you.
The Problem With Transitioning That I See With Many Wellness Entrepreneurs
The problem with this transition is that many wellness entrepreneurs who want to grow and scale online, be profitable online, is that they have a ton of experience as a clinical practitioner, many years working as a clinical practitioner, sometimes a decade or even more working as a clinical practitioner for someone else or themselves, and then they try to pivot into the online world or add an online program and they fail or they don’t succeed as quickly as they would like. And they think something’s gone wrong and they start to give up.
I want to give you some statistics around this. Nearly 80% of healthcare practitioners who attempt to launch an online program fail to reach even $50,000 in revenue in one year. 80% of those who start an online program, 65% give up within their first year. That means that you can have a clinical practitioner who’s maybe making close to six figures or six figures in their job or their brick and mortar might be clearing six figures or even multiple six figures with a staff and then they bring in an online program and they don’t even hit $50,000 in their first year.
That can feel really frustrating and they might think that something’s gone wrong, that they’re not cut out to have a wellness program, that no one wants their work or that they just don’t have the time and energy to pursue an online program so they get back into the mill. They get back into the grind of either working for someone else or back into the grind of their brick and mortar business and they’re really missing out on so much when that first year of failure is just the beginning.
It can be so hard when you’ve earned advanced degrees, countless certifications, helped thousands of people and now you’re ready to expand your impact through an online program but something isn’t clicking. You’re trying to grow your online audience and practitioners much younger than you with way less experience seem to be blowing it out of the water, going viral, growing their audience rapidly and you have so much more clinical experience and knowledge to offer yet your reels fall flat. No one clicks on your e-mails, only one or two people buy your program after hours and hours of hard work. It can feel so discouraging, defeating, frustrating. I know, I’ve been there myself.

The Solution: Strategic Humility
The solution, the key, lies in embracing what I call strategic humility. Now you want to be careful about not using this against yourself so let me explain this here. Let me tell you what it first does not mean.
Strategic humility does not mean putting down your practitioner’s skills thinking that someone’s not buying your online program because of your practitioner’s skills are lacking and then you need to go out and purchase or do another certification. That is not what I’m talking about.
I’m also not talking about stopping all continuing education courses, certifications, training, etc. Please continue those.
What I’m talking about is strategic humility in terms of your business skills. This is a very different problem meaning you’re going to have a very different solution and specifically I’m talking about strategic humility for business skills in marketing and selling and delivering an online program.
It is different than your in-person practitioner skills and sometimes we think, I’m going to be honest here and again, no shame, no judgment, I’ve been there, but there’s a sense of entitlement when we have years, decades in clinical experience that automatically transfers into marketing and selling an online program and delivering that online program and getting people results and some of it does. We’re not starting from ground zero here but there is a different skill set to be learned in the online world.
Success in your clinical practice doesn’t automatically translate to success online and it’s okay. It’s about developing emotional resilience, developing the emotional capacity to be that beginner again. Again, not in your practitioner skills, in your brick and mortar or in-person, but being a beginner again in marketing, selling, and delivering in online specifically.
Must Read: Explore the Best Online Wellness Programs for Your Business
I really haven’t heard this talked about anywhere in the online world in the massive online programs with the big gurus teaching online work. I haven’t heard this mindset talked about in this specific way and it’s really what I personally had to go through when learning how to translate decades of experience of working one-to-one to working one-to-one with people online and then in a one-to-many model working with people in groups.
I had to humble myself in other coaching programs with other practitioners that make less money than I do or haven’t had as much clinical practice as I do. I had to watch much younger other entrepreneurs succeed faster than me with way less experience in practitioner skills and in business only because they were courageous and open-minded enough to quickly learn the different set of skills that’s needed to marketing and sell an online program.
I also had to learn how to deliver in a one-to-one online fashion ensure that my one-to-one clients were getting health and wellness results working with me virtually and then learn how to deliver in a group program which again was very humbling to me because I was used to teaching group programs for years in-person and in studios through workshops and trainings and group wellness classes.
I’d been teaching them for over a decade but if you looked at my marketing years ago and I’m still evolving in my marketing now, you wouldn’t maybe get the sense of that because my marketing was a little clunky, it wasn’t concise or succinct, visually it didn’t look that great, I had so much to learn but when I did learn it and I was patient and stuck through that hard time.

My Own Experience and Business Figures
So let me tell you some numbers here in my brick and mortar business. My first full year in business I think I was at $48,000 gross revenue. Year two I was at about $120,000 gross revenue. So my brick and mortar jumped pretty quickly.
But year one and for my online business was at about $60,000 gross and year two was not that much higher, about $78,000 gross. So I still hadn’t hit six figures. It was very humbling to me. I took it very personally thinking that people just didn’t want to work with me, I wasn’t cool enough, I didn’t provide enough information. I really beat myself up and then that mindset cycle caused me to micro quit, self-doubt a lot of my work, overwork, and cause my revenue to plateau because I think the third year, I must have stayed around that and then I eventually broke through.
I don’t remember, I have to look, but if it was year three or year four I did break through and even hit more than my brick and mortar year at about $140,000 in revenue. So it is possible to break through this! You have to be patient you have to let go of your timelines! You have to keep learning and keep going! Again, not in a hustling way, but in a sustainable way.

Data To Support Practitioners Who Successfully Built Six-Figure Online Program
Let’s look at the data to support this. Among practitioners who successfully build six-figure online programs, 92 report that their biggest breakthrough came after embracing what I’m about to share.
So studies show that practitioners who adopt a learning mindset are three and a half more times likely to succeed in their own online business ventures than those who don’t. Meaning, if you are not open-minded to being that beginner mindset and learning and investing time and money and to learn the skills of an online business or be patient through launching and failing, or you’re not mentally prepared for all of that, you might give up before you succeed.
And my passion, my purpose, is to help heal the wellness community, get the wellness community out of burnout, out of overworking, out of hustling, out of racing all around and not having enough time for their own self-care or not being authentic to their own self-care practices – again, no judgment here – definitely overworked and or not being profitable, not doing all this work and not having any money to take home, to show for it, because of many mindset issues.
This being one of them and I can’t tell you how many spiritual practitioners, definitely more than a handful, that I work with in various different capacities have told me that, you know, “This is my work in the world, this is my purpose, this is the path,” and it’s hard for me sometimes to say a hard message that needs to be heard especially when it’s different than what’s being put out there in the world that you can just launch this online program and make thousands of dollars in your first launch when that’s only a small percentage of the community that can really do that their first time out of the gate without failing, without having to go through a lot of frustration.

What Happens When You Take On The Beginner Mindset
But when you’re prepared, when you take on the beginner mindset, this is what can happen: You become more open to learning, adapting in your strategic approaches as well as your mindset, your marketing messages become more relatable and authentic, you connect more with your audience and your audience begins to understand and connect with you more because you understand their journey and they know a little bit more about you. There isn’t just a generic marketing approach. It isn’t just a generic program that helps people thrive in their wellness or feel better in their body. It’s very specific, your business decisions become more strategic rather than ego-driven.
You develop the resilience needed for a sustainable long-term successful online business or and or program.

Strategies to Implement To Adapt Beginner’s Mindset
Okay! So here are some strategies to implement again starting with that beginner’s mind.
Create a journal whether that’s online, document, or pen and paper, wherever you journal and start to document how you feel day to day in your business. Start to track where you get frustrated, start to track where you feel like you’re hitting obstacles, begin to look at your business from a bird’s eye view as if you were outside of your business and looking down, watching you how do you show up day after day, do you avoid value perfectionism and people pleasing, do you treat failure as data or a personal defeat, and to write all this down, you can evaluate your consultation calls, you can evaluate your reels, you can evaluate your stories, full launches from this perspective.
And if you want help with this, you can also ask an AI tool to help you evaluate a specific facet of your business. Again whether it’s the marketing, the selling portion, the delivering portion, you can ask it what prompts to ask you and your own self-coaching and journaling. You can ask it for feedback on certain materials. There’s really great ways to use AI now to help with this reflection because I know for me personally sometimes sitting down in journaling or self-coaching, it just feels like fluff. I don’t feel like I’m getting enough done. It doesn’t feel like a strategic use of my time.
But when I am bouncing the ideas off AI or getting specific prompts, it feels purposeful. I trust the process a bit more of course now I’ve been in the coaching and mindset world now for several years and have seen the benefits of doing continuous self-coaching and coaching with other practitioners work and seeing the growth for myself and my emotional capacity and my resilience and ability to handle failure, to perfect things less, to people please less, to be more bold, to be more outspoken and confident, then it reinforces the value to continue on doing this.

You also want to start to get feedback early and often so that is for marketing feedback can be engagement or watch time if people aren’t watching your reels 80 or more through. That’s feedback right there. If people aren’t saving your reels or clicking on your stories or messaging you, that’s feedback. Again, not personal against you which is something about the message, if your consultation calls aren’t closing, that’s feedback right there, if when you’re delivering your program, if people aren’t getting results on average, if people are complaining about certain things, again not personal, it’s all feedback.
You want to start from the very beginning and really value feedback as learning not making it mean that you don’t have the ability to be successful or that your program doesn’t need tweaking or refining or that your marketing doesn’t need tweaking or refining.
Another strategy is to focus on connection before your credentials in your marketing so lead with stories that are relatable before listing your impressive credentials or years of experience. On a consultation call, ask questions about the struggles, their desires, before you. Just as my coach would say, peacock and list out all the things that you do and then start to talk about the frameworks of your program, share your own struggles, and be vulnerable sometimes with your clients in containers. Be aware of what you want to share and be vulnerable with online. You don’t have to share everything but you do want to be relatable. I think sometimes as experienced practitioners, I had to learn this and I actually use AI to help with this quite a lot where we’re used to a teaching model and we bring that into marketing especially if we’re in the health care world.
If we’re used to telling someone their diagnosis is this, their treatment plan is that, this is what they need to do for homework, it’s very like talking at them and sometimes that’s needed, but even in my health care and mortar one-to-one people, I’ve been more collaborative, more listening, more meeting my patients where they’re at. I’ve been doing this for the last maybe seven maybe ten years now and it’s made a world of difference in terms of people that have been just working with me for 10 years or more.
I’ve been learning how to be more empathetic, compassionate, less judgmental, especially if people have issues going on in their life and they might show up a little bit flaky or stressed or overwhelmed in my programs. That’s the whole reason why they’re hiring me.
So then in my marketing and my selling, I have to look at, “Okay where might I be putting myself on a pedestal and talking down to people? How can I be more relatable in my marketing approach? How can I be more connecting and in service to people?” As they move through marketing and selling, not putting pressure on them that there’s an expectation if I do connect with them, if I do share my time with them that they have to purchase from me right now. So it’s examining this for yourself.
Then the other strategy is to realize it’s okay to build slowly, in fact that can be more sustainable and set a bigger foundation for you to grow faster in the future and it’s also remembering, this is said a lot, but you have to remind yourself of this a lot if you have a friend that is growing much faster than you or you see a peer growing much faster than you or again not as experienced growing much faster as you, you just don’t know the set of skills that they brought into this online world.
Maybe they come from a marketing background, they worked as a marketer for five or seven years in the corporate world, or maybe they don’t have children and so they have a little bit more to give in their business both just strategically, time-wise, bandwidth mindset, energy recovery, they have a lot more to give right now. They’re in a different phase of life, maybe they don’t have a health issue that consumes more time and I know I teach a lot about how the amount of time that your butt is in the seat in your business in your office working on things does not equate to the success which is 100% true and there’s also this: there’s this alternate situation that can also be true that yes, sometimes more hours working in the business does lead to faster growth, both can be true.
Let’s say you spend two hours to send 10 e-mails out to your audience. If only one person clicks and converts on those e-mails, that leads to two thousand dollars made from the that two hours of work versus you can send and spend one hour writing five e-mails and get five clicks and three conversions at that two thousands. Now you’ve made six thousand dollars in that one hour. So it’s the messaging in that e-mail, not necessarily the amount of e-mails you send.
Must Read: How to Grow Your Email List
However, that being said, you also have to figure out the messaging and sometimes it is quantity over quality of figuring out messaging in number of reels, number of e-mails, number of stories, number of consultations and that’s all time and sometimes you have to put in the grind of learning that skill set.
Someone might come in with the skills with that already in place from previous history, maybe this is their second career and they’re bringing a certain skill set or again maybe they’re in a different phase of life or have different life circumstances or phases happening in their personal life that or allow them to have more energy and time in their business.
And it doesn’t mean that you can’t be successful. It just means you have to go at your own pace, stay in your own lane, build at a sustainable rate for you and if you’re thinking, “Well, I’ve invested so much time, energy, education, and practice. Shouldn’t it count for something?” Yes of course it counts! Again, starting from ground zero you’ll be able to bring that 100% into the online world and get results for your clients pretty immediately.
Difference of Working With People Online and In-Person Group Setting
But again there is subtle differences of working with people online and of course there’s subtle differences working with people in groups even if you taught group classes workshops leading a group program a cohort guiding people through for eight weeks, it’s a different experience.
For example, think of it this way. Would you expect a master chef to automatically know how to run a successful restaurant chain? Running an online business requires its own set of skills and it’s exciting because you get to grow in new and different ways.
I think we do this a lot as practitioners. We open that brick and mortar, we jump to that online world and we expect it to be successful right off the bat or a successful yoga teacher can automatically run a successful and profitable yoga studio. I think we’re starting to learn now that practitioner skills don’t automatically equate to business skills right away.

Same is true for the online world, even though how much the passive income success in the online world is promoted all over the internet, there’s a stat that can help you to feel better. Only 8% of health care practitioners who launch online programs reach the six-figure mark in their first year! So kudos to you if you’re part of that eight percent. If you’re not, if you’re part of the 92, keep going! Just keep going and that number jumps to 34 percent by year three for those who persists and keep going and adopt their approach and refine and learn and you’ve read of many stories here on the blog.
Just go read about my client stories like Julie who’d been at it for 17 years as an online practitioner and some brick and mortar in-person work but she really wanted to hit in her online business. She tried everything! Launching, scaling many many different types of offers all at the same time and it was finally when we streamlined and simplified things that she worked a heck of a lot less and her revenue jumped from 2K-4K months to 10K.

Conclusion
So just remember the truth is building a successful online wellness program isn’t about the number of years you’ve been practicing or how many degrees you have or certifications. It’s about your willingness to embrace the discomfort at doing something and being the beginner at something new again. Your clinical expertise is your foundation but your ability to be strategically humble will also be the bridge to your online six-figure success.
So I’ll leave you with one final statistic that I find incredibly encouraging. While only 12% of practitioners succeed in their first online program launch, that number rises to 47% by the third attempt. So the data is clear showing us again and again that persistence and adaptability, the willingness to learn and be the beginner are more predictive of success than years in clinical experience alone.
So remember every successful online entrepreneur started as a beginner in some way. The only difference between those who make it and those who don’t is their willingness to embrace the learning curve with an open heart and mind and to keep going without hustling, without beating themselves up, without over working.
So, if you find value in this message, if you have a friend that needs to hear it today, please share it with them and until next time!
Keep going, stay humble in your business skills, confident in your practitioner skills, and you will build something amazing! All right see you next week! Bye for now!
