Table of Contents

Before we get started on today’s blog, I want to make sure you know that the Instagram Message Makeover Clinic doors are open so you can get in.

This clinic is starting in May 2025, but if you get in during this two-week window, especially if you enroll by February 28, you’re going to get a one-to-one strategy call with me and that is to refine your offer, go over your unique marketing plan, personally review your Instagram bio and content and messaging and create a content strategy with you personally. Also, be able to get personalized weekly feedback from me on one piece of content each week.

You can do this call in March so that by May you’re ready to go hit the ground running. Also, because you’ll have two bonus months in the portal to go through all the content and start the process to start growing your audience of excited wellness clients that are ready to work with you now.

Getting in early, you also get access to a Slack content day with me to get more feedback plus a $300 discount on the program. Now normally I don’t discount my services so this is huge. I just want to make it accessible for everyone to be able to get there, get into the program because I know how important and vital it is to grow an online audience and Instagram is a very simple and easy platform to do this.

This is a 12-week program and here’s what you’re going to get in the 12 weeks:

–          12 live 60 to 90-minute coaching calls with me and the community

–          Weekly content reviews from the community and I in a private group

–          Proven frameworks to double your audience and double your visibility

–          Bio and highlights optimization

–          Swipe files for faster content creation

Over the 12 weeks we are going to go over bio and highlight optimizations, reel content creation frameworks, how to understand insights for both your reels and your stories so you’re not just creating content but creating content that actually grows and converts your audience, simple tech solutions so you can create content faster, clarifying growth conversion content, styles of content and when to use each, how to write magnetic captions, how to plan your content and batch it, creating systems for this, using Instagram to help sell out your workshops and retreats.

This is very specific to wellness entrepreneurs. There are a lot of Instagram programs out there but not ones that are helping you fill your workshops and sell out your wellness programs specifically, how to sell on stories and sign online wellness clients.

If you sign up by February 28th, 2025 you do get the extra bonuses of the 15-minute Instagram strategy session that’s one to one, weekly personal content reviews and exclusive Slack content day access with me. That’s the $300 discount. Doors will officially close March 7th and we will be starting in May.

As a reminder, one to one clients working with me in May will get this for free so if you want to work one to one with me you can start now as available and again get that bonus access to the content and hit the ground running when we do go live as a group community in May.

So if you are just starting out and want to grow that Instagram audience, the group community is perfect for you.  _________________________________________________________________________________

Hey there wellness entrepreneur. Welcome back!

This morning, I woke up to a message. My one to one clients are able to DM me in between sessions and I woke up to one of these clients telling me that she would need a surgery and she was worried and concerned about her business and wanted help making a plan. Now, this surgery was unexpected due to an accident and it got me thinking about all you brick and mortar practitioners especially those of you that work with your hands whether you’re a manual therapist, a massage therapist, a yoga teacher who does a lot of manual adjustments and what if something happened and you couldn’t use your body the way that you’re using now to perform your work.

So this happened to me actually several years ago when I was first diagnosed with rectal cancer and a genetic mutation called Lynch syndrome. I had a busy brick and mortar practice. I am heavy manual therapist since I was a massage therapist since 2000. I was also a yoga teacher so I was used to using my body to demo in classes, give adjustments in classes. I was using my body all day long every day and that’s what brought the revenue in and then I received this diagnosis and two surgeons telling me that I would need two different types of surgery.

One was a preventative surgery because when you have Lynch syndrome, you are at risk for many different types of organs especially the reproductive organs. Uterine and ovarian and even fallopian tubes is on there but uterine is very high on our risk list and ovarian is not as high but there’s no good early detection screens so any practitioner I talked to strongly recommended the preventative surgery because I was young and it’s hard to screen for ovarian cancer. And then of course my GI surgeon told me that I needed surgery to remove the current rectal cancer.

Now all of this was a surprise to me, quite a shock, and my brain immediately went to, “Well if I have to have these surgeries how is my business going to stay afloat?” Not to mention all the doctor’s appointments and all that goes into with a life changing diagnosis like that. So when my client texted this morning, I immediately thought of that place where I was and now I have so much information to offer her and we can create a plan and she will do just fine but back then I was really freaking out I was not prepared. And so, this week’s blog is to Help You Think Of Your Own Safety Net.

What is your safety plan? How can you de-risk your business if your body couldn’t perform the way you needed it to bring in revenue? What would happen if you woke up tomorrow and you couldn’t use your hands? Maybe you broke your wrist or developed carpal tunnel or got in an accident or you had a back flare up where you couldn’t get off the couch. You couldn’t bend forward. You couldn’t demo your yoga poses.

So for me, because I had two surgeries, I had one surgery that was about four to six weeks’ recovery before I could actually get back into doing manual work and demoing again. I could start working online a few weeks earlier. So there’s a little sneak peek on how I kept my revenue going and then just two years later, I had the second surgery and had to repeat the process again.

So I’ve done this many times in my business and I was able to stay profitable each year even though I had surgeries and many many doctors’ appointments and I still have many doctors’ appointments for Lynch syndrome cancer screens but I don’t have to overwork. I’m able to keep revenue going and as long as I keep my mindset in check I don’t have to rush back from a surgery.

The Key For Me In Staying Profitable Despite Having To Take Time Off

So the key for me was having a digital safety plan, digital safety net.

So you’ve read about this on previous blogs but I think because we are in 2025, it’s good to have an update and I’ve learned even more now that my business has really been growing and I really have been optimizing my systems that I have so much to share with you today.

So back when I first had my diagnosis, I really wish I had an online audience and online presence already built. Back then I was using Instagram primarily as a hobby. It wasn’t my ideal client avatar that was following me. I was posting mainly yoga pictures as art not really to inform people or I was just dabbling. You’ve read about this several blogs ago about how I was very hesitant to post on social media. I had a lot of imposter syndrome. I had a lot of fear about promoting that I did yoga and physical therapy.

So I wasn’t not on social media consistently, definitely not promoting my business consistently, and I wish I had been because when I had my surgeries it would have felt less risky. I would have felt less scared about taking the time off.

Simple Strategy To Help You Stay Afloat When You Need A Time Off

Now of course one simple strategy and I highly recommend for so many reasons is to build a savings for your business specifically have three six months of revenue.

Because of my diagnoses I try to keep six months’ revenue in there as a worst case. I have no plan to take six months off but that just gives me peace of building savings and here’s the thing: I have that savings and I haven’t had to touch it even though I’ve had these surgeries. I’ve had to dip into it a little bit but I’m able to replenish it quickly but it is a nice thing to have.

Things I Wished I Knew Before My Surgeries

The reason why I haven’t had to dip into it fully is because of this strategy so I wish I had an online presence. I wish I was promoting consistently about my business. I wish I understood better marketing and how marketing wasn’t just self-promotion and I had mindset tools to help me overcome my imposter syndrome and fear of posting and all the techniques I know now on messaging and shifting the focus from me and my fears to helping the individual on the other side of the screen and how my messaging could do that a daily basis.

I also wish I knew that I could just work online easily and simply by just transitioning some of my people to virtual one-to-ones instead of trying to build out a whole course with pre-recorded modules and worksheets and deliverables. I wish I just knew I could keep it simple and keep my revenue going even better than I had instead of trying to shift everything to a many-to-many model like a membership, a group, or a course. And I tried all of those.

The Importance of Being Optimized Online

So the solution for you today if you want to learn from my mistakes is to build a strong online presence now. Even if you don’t have a plan to go online, remember, these days consumer research showing that when people come to your website to look and find out if you’re the practitioner that they want to hire and work with they’re not just looking at your website. They are going to Instagram as well. Instagram is getting better with SEO where you can search your town and physical therapist or yoga teacher just like you would on Google and practitioners are popping up.

So you want to be part of that SEO search in your town especially if you’re a brick and mortar and for the services that you offer. People are going to Instagram over YouTube or Facebook to search their practitioners out is one of the reasons why I do teach a lot of Instagram tactics specifically.

Now, not all my clients are on Instagram and use that as their primary marketing tool but they do have a profile that is up to date. And if they are using other marketing tactics like more in-person networking events and workshops and creating strong referral programs for their brick and mortar that’s totally fine but their Instagram handle is still SEO searchable and if they needed to pivot and start to grow an online presence they’re able to do that quickly because it’s already set up and their account could even though they’re focusing on these other tactics because their account is current and they’re posting enough to stay relevant, they are growing followers.

If you can add an hour a week to update your Instagram and keep it relevant and post, you can grow a secondary audience and actually some of this audience may be appropriate for your in-person sessions right now actually but you can grow this audience to both grow your in-person practice as well as your online practice whether you want to grow online or work online right now.

But there’s so many examples where my clients are I would say 95-99% in-person but there’s a snowstorm. So for example, I have a client in the Panhandle of Florida and this year had a crazy snowstorm for a few days and she saw and worked with some people online virtually and so there’s so many things that you can do virtually to help keep revenue going if you can’t get into your clinic, if your clients or patients can’t get into their clinic.

I have another client in Colorado and she works with moms and sometimes these moms will hire child care so they can come and work on their women’s health issues but that child care will fall through maybe the nanny will get sick or cancel or flake last minute instead of the mom having to cancel their session and not getting the help they need. My client is able to work with these moms easily online in that session instead and price is same, everything’s the same, they just show up on zoom instead of in the clinic.

So when you are set up to go online, it’s a benefit not only to de-risk your business, have a safety net, but as it’s a great help for your clients to giving them flexibility in ways that they can work with you when life happens or whether it happens but what can really add fire to your virtual safety net or digital presence is starting.

First step, having an engaged online audience so your audience knows that virtual sessions are available, you’ve educated them through your e-mails and Instagram for example, if that’s where you’re located on, benefits of online sessions, what can be done in online sessions, what looks like you’re walking them through all those steps so that if you need to pivot they are already prepared and know the value of online sessions.

Or if you just wish to add that as an option, they will start that work now which gives you different ways to bring in revenue and again de-risk your business. So having that engaged online audience means that you can pivot to online offerings anytime you need, you’re able to create some passive income through digital products, or start an ascension lead funnel like for example you have a low ticket workshop, you can have that on your website, or even run ads to it if you are past six figures and ready to start ads, you can run ads to a low ticket workshop which then lead to working with you one-to-one online, or even in-person if you’re running ads, you can say, “If you’re local work with me here, if you are outside this area or want to work on this and this, work with me online.”

This way, you can begin to build your authority beyond your local community, you attract lifelong clients that know that you’re going to be available to work with them in-person, maybe they’ll work on rehabbing from an injury or a specific diagnosis or symptom, and if they need to, they’ll be able to pivot online and then when they complete this work, they know they’ll be able to work with you more after that on wellness or other health goals.

How To Build This Safety Net With Specific Steps That You Can Start Implementing Today

#1: You want to start documenting your clinical successes so start capturing your work.

Maybe taking before or after photos with consent of course or short video recordings of patients or clients in your practice, start recording short video testimonials, or capturing them through a Facebook live interview or an Instagram interview if you don’t have a podcast or just do a talking head video, short testimonial, create case study highlights, share clients at different progress milestone markers.

So for example, I have many clients that talk about just starting their business and for example my client Alyssa, she just went into practice by herself and her first month brought in five thousand dollars and now we did set up a foundation before she went off on her own learning the skills of how to bring in clients market and grow her audience and convert that audience when she still had her job so that when she left and had her first month where she was paying overhead she brought in 5k. This is huge!

My client Dana who also started her practice recently, she’s in the first year of her business, has been able to hit 7K-9K months utilizing and leveraging yoga classes and yoga workshops that she and a community that she had built prior to going out on her own.

You’ve also read about clients who’ve hit their first six-figure years as well as clients I work with in the multiple six-figure range. You read about clients getting fully booked, clients developing a waitlist clients, selling out their first online launches, clients booking out their in-person sessions, so all different types of milestones, I cover, I share success journeys of clients just getting their first consultation calls and closing those consultation calls.

But what milestone markers in your ideal clients’ journeys can you share through client stories not just testimonials but stories I should say, not just testimonial quotes but actually the story of the journey to document them. They are gold for building an online audience that is excited to work with you.

Step #2: Differentiating Yourself In The Busy Online Wellness Marketplace.

So you want to describe online through the client’s perspective of their day-to-day health struggles and their wellness desires certain frameworks or modalities that you might use any unique methods that you’ve developed or frameworks that you developed and use.

Like for example my client she created her Fit2Be fitness method combining physical therapy, women’s health fitness, and hypopressive training all into her own fitness classes.

This makes you different based upon your own life experience, your own stories, your own health struggles, and where you are now as well as all your certifications and trainings, what are common questions asked to you in sessions, what aha and wins that clients have experienced in sessions, what are common patterns you see or mistakes you see your client making in terms of wellness and health, to collect all that information and as if you were a bird observing the session where you’re starting to take note of all this and common phrases you say frequently and create a document where you can keep track of it because this will start to build out an online portal or maybe at certain exercises you find yourself explaining over and over and over again or yoga flows or yoga sequences.

Step #3: Starting To Create Your Content Library.

These can be some of that you find yourself repeating or anatomy educational, explanations, exercises, flows, neuroscience health, nutrition tips, protocols, guidelines, frameworks, things that you find yourself sharing in more sessions than not, that can become pre-recorded content.

For me, this is an ongoing process. If you’re a client of mine, you know how deep my online portal is. I love creating content for my clients sometimes to my downfall but it all doesn’t get created at one time. This is my bonus project.

So when I for example, I am coming up on an Instagram Message Makeover Clinic launching that and as I’m coming up closer on a launch, I always review what people have gone through and struggled with in past cohorts and how I could help them to get results quicker and easier and I update my content or add to it or simplify and this is always done in our blocks of time. Maybe if I have a client that needs to reschedule because they’re sick or I have an open hour which is rare or if I have just blocked off two hours of time to work on my content portal. I do it in short chunks of time where I’ll just update a couple videos or add in a couple videos or create a worksheet and a guideline.

I don’t block off a day or even multiple days to create this. I am continuously signing clients, working with those clients and getting them in there to test what works and what doesn’t because that’s going to inform my content and make it better instead of hypothetical situations where I’m thinking I know what my clients need, instead, it’s based on actual data.

Then as you’re building your online audience with Instagram, you can also start to build your e-mail list. You can create a simple lead magnet and use Instagram. For example, reels or carousels to have people comment below, to receive your free guide, and start adding e-mails and get used to your call to action saying, “Work with me in person here, schedule a free consultation to work with me online here.”

It’s really simple. If you have Acuity or Calendly you can just have a DV. One DV that is online or a phone call and then you direct them because obviously they’re going to where they’re located, you direct them, “Oh okay, you’re local, do you want to work with me in the clinic or would you prefer to work with me online?” Obviously if they’re not local they could come fly in for intensive. I have clients that offer that or they have the ability to work with you online. So many options but it starts with building that online audience and then getting them off the platform of your choice into your e-mail and then starting to market to them and not ignoring them and just focusing on your local community and then from there, you could go big and just start offering one-to-one virtual sessions.

I wish I had done this so much sooner than when I first did or you can wait and work with your local clients in your brick and mortar as normal or teach your yoga classes as normal but if an opportunity arose or you needed to or a client needed to not be able or couldn’t get in person, then you always have the option to teach a class online or pivot and do a session online and continue to do that until you got more confident and then you could start offering online work more readily then since you have your content library created.

You can also instead of selling more one-off now, you have incentive to sell packages and as part of that package, they get your content library. Again, I think so many practitioners love this because they have so much information from all the trainings and certifications that you’ve taken and now you have a place to really show your expertise and highlight and be that teacher and give them all this information and they can go through it at their own pace. You don’t have to fire hose them anymore in one-off sessions or that first evaluation, you can take your time and allow them to take their time and get the information in bite-sized digestible chunks.

Conclusion

Okay, so if you feel like you don’t have time for social media or you really don’t like techie stuff, remember the benefits of being on social media and remember you are there to be the light for social media and it’s not about you on social media.

It’s about helping and serving those that you want to and by having an up-to-date and relevant profile, you are helping people because you’re able to be found easier and they will have hope that, oh there is someone that can help them with their health issue and it can be quite doable.

An hour a week to stay relevant, that is very manageable, even if you prefer hands-on work, I hear you! That was me! I’ve been a massage therapist since 2000, I love working with my hands, my hands are my eyes, but I’ll tell you, there is nothing like having a safety plan for when life surprises you and can’t use your body or you can’t use your hands you will be so grateful you are set up.

So just set it up. Set up the online audience, set up the portfolio, you can give it to your clients that get packages, that work with you in-person for your hands, you can still utilize all that and maybe you’ll never need that online audience and you’ll just have it there for people to and find you, SEO based on Instagram and compare with your website for example.

I hope you know that life never happens to you and you have to use that online audience, an online strategy, but if it does, you’ll be prepared make this work for you so your revenue continues to grow and your business doesn’t risk being have to shut the doors, you don’t have to become an influence, you just need to build an engaged following who trusts your expertise, you don’t need hundreds of thousands of followers.

Bonus: A Six-Week Plan Example To Get You Started

Okay! Here’s an example of a six-week plan to get you started.

·   So week one, you’re going to set up your professional social media profiles.

·   Week two create your first lead magnet.

·   Week three develop your frameworks or begin to highlight any of your unique methodologies or frameworks that you use.

·   Week four start documenting client successes.

·   Week five begin getting people off the platform onto your e-mail list.

·   And week six start creating that digital content library and this will prevent you from having to start from zero.

If you do face a crisis where you’re not able to work in-person, you’ll prevent losing months of potential revenue and audience building, you won’t miss out on any passive income opportunities if you start promoting a low ticket item, you won’t risk financial devastation because you can’t work and your competitors won’t outrace you in building their online audience. Wish I had these systems in place when I first got my diagnosis. It would have been so less stressful.

Okay before we wrap up, I’ll give you one quick win to start with today. Just choose one of these strategies, maybe it’s starting with your Instagram bio and one post where you post one tip or you’re going to just set up your lead magnet and link tree so it’s ready to go for someone to opt in while you start small but start it this week. What are you going to do this week?

If you found this helpful, please share it with another manual therapist or practitioner who works in person who might need to hear this today and de-risk their business as well don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @igniteurwellnessbusiness and leave a review if this was meaningful for you. I so appreciate reading those!

Okay have a great week and I’ll see you next week for more! Bye for now!

Hi, I'm Dr. Alison McLean, DPT

I believe wellness practitioners deserve to live the freedom they teach.

Not someday. Not after one more certification or one more full caseload. Now. We entered this work to help people heal — and somewhere along the way, we became the most burned out people in the room. Seeing clients back to back, skipping meals, missing family moments, quietly wondering if this is as good as it gets. What they didn't teach us in school is that the business model we inherited was never designed to give us freedom. It was designed to keep us busy. There's a version of your practice that doesn't require your sacrifice as the cost of admission. One where your income isn't capped by your calendar, your clients get your best, and you actually have a life outside the treatment room.

That's the world I'm building — and I'd love to help you build it too.
