Hello there, wellness entrepreneur. Welcome back!
Today I’m honored to have on, again, special guest, Taimi Lawlor. And you can find her on Instagram @astretchbeyondyoga. She’s told her story a few times on the blog, so you can also head back to past blogs to read about her journey.
But today we are going to talk about her journey, how she started making her few hundred dollars, her first few clients, working with me, to now hitting 9K months, and I am so excited for her. And I think her story is so relatable and inspirational, so make sure you read the full blog to know all the golden nuggets!
Question to Taimi: Taimi, right off the bat, just tell us a little bit about what you’re doing and who you’re helping.
Taimi: Sure! So I’ve definitely evolved since we first started together. And I’ve really honed my practice, and still always around anxiety and then underneath anxiety, all the other health ailments. Everything from thyroid issues, to weight gain, to fatigue. So I’ve really honed in on two tests that nobody else seems to be focusing on. Married together, I took the hair tissue mineral analysis test and married it with the 3×4 genetic blueprint.
So I’m starting really at the top and I’m looking at the cellular level. Of course, I’m still bringing in because it’s always important for healing and healing can’t happen without the nervous system regulation component. So tapping, yoga, a few biohacking tools that I really gravitate towards to make a full package for my clients so they can heal or at least improve greatly in the area of anxiety, mind, body, and spirit.
Alison: I love this. And I always find talking with you so fascinating because having a genetic mutation myself, I’ve gotten to learn just a very tip of the iceberg in knowledge about genetics. And I think it’s the new wave of medicine is just understanding our actual genetic blueprint and how that might make us more vulnerable to certain diseases and how we can utilize biohacking, like you say, and test like HTMA to understand where we are now and with what are the strengths in our body, what might be the weaknesses in our body to really help us to live a life with more energy and feel calmer when it seems like nothing else is working at times.

Taimi: Right, and there’s genetics. I’m not a geneticist. I’m looking at low-pentron’s genes. So that means that I’m taking the misspellings that are in your body and I’m seeing where the switches can be turned off or maybe on all through diet, lifestyle, and supplementation.
And that’s why HTMA was such a good partner for the 3×4 because all the cells need, the DNA need certain spark plugs. They need certain enzyme co-factors to turn on to do the job.
So for example, even thyroid disorder, if there is a certain misspelling in a gene, we can look at it through this test and identify, “Okay, maybe it’s time to go ask your doctor for this and maybe you need to focus on these types of foods and this type of exercise.” So everything that I’m doing is, there’s 166 genes that can be affected. So I’m really looking at nutrigenomics and my plans are built around that and what enzymes you need, what co-factors you need to feel better.
Alison: Love it, love it. And just from that little snippet, people can see how your depth of knowledge and how you’re such an expertise in here. And I think we can really, how you’ve made this possible in your journey still working as a speech pathologist part-time, growing your business, learning the skills of what you need to do as a business owner to get clients, grow your revenue, help them successfully and grow your practitioner skills.

Question to Taimi: So let’s start a little bit closer to the beginning of your journey. What do you feel like juggling a part-time business and juggling your part-time work is a struggle for a lot of people, managing the schedule, trying to do it, all the things. You do have stepchildren as well. A husband now, you got married during this time. So you have a very full life. How did you?
Taimi: Well, I couldn’t have done it without you because there were lots of days, especially the first two years, maybe even like first two and a half, close to three where I was like, “I don’t know if I can do this, is this possible? I should just go back into the schools or be a speech pathologist.” You held the belief for me some days more than I could hold it for myself, which propelled me forward. And also watching you evolve and change and get bigger and bigger, it gave me hope. Like it gave me hope that first time I met you, in Prana and La Jolla as my anatomy teacher in my 300, like, “Wait, what? She’s a PTU as a yoga business?” Like, that’s my dream.
So right there, it was meant to be. And some days are easier than others. That’s for sure. I got to thank Matt for a lot because he’s let me work a lot to build this and also held the belief. So there’s been, it’s not an easy road, but because I want it so badly and because I know every time I help somebody and it makes such a big improvement, it’s just, it feels so good. And whenever I’m doing it, it feels so good. Like, yes, I might be exhausted some nights, but it’s worth it because it’s like coming from my heart and I really love it. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do.

So it’s a lot of, I’ve always been good, I guess, at juggling a lot of things, maybe. Not always on time, but I’ve always been able to manage. And so working with you from the beginning, having someone to lean into and having guidance because there’s some times we now even just get on and it’s like, “Okay, I’ve been so busy with clients and work that I need help wordsmithing this email because I want to tell everybody the facts and the data and that’s not very exciting for social media.” So you’re able to quickly, like as soon as I tell you what I’m thinking, you’re able to help me wordsmithing. I’m like, oh yeah, I’m still not to the point where I can do that easily because I’m still, I always just want to know the information.
And so I think it’s been a good balance too, working with you because I’m digging and studying and then I can come to you and you help me form it into a way that people actually are compelled to come and listen to the facts once they meet me.
Alison: Yeah, and they have been because you’ve been steadily growing your client load, you’ve been steadily growing your practitioner skills, you also recently got certified through Harvard in their healthy lifestyle course as well and you’re really able to pull it all together and people come and work with you from all these different ways, like sometimes from your yoga classes, sometimes from just knowing you, whether it’s in the school or out in life or referrals from past clients. Now for you, it’s all those foundation steps that you’ve been working on are coming together where they all fuel each other.
Taimi: Right. And I feel like I should accept it. I’m always somebody who’s like slower. I’m always, takes me longer and slower and I like to learn everything the hardest way possible but I think it’s paid off in the sense that like slow and steady wins the race and I’m stuck with it and the doubt has fallen away too and it’s not just because like these last few months have been so successful.
I think it’s because I’ve just seen through all the trainings I’ve taken and all our work together, like how it’s on the fringe of what people might think, right? And of healing, because I still believe in western medicine but I always believe in integrative health and I always believe in yoga and I’ll always believe everything that I do, I’ve done on myself. And if it works, I want to share it. I want to tell people. And so that’s how this business has grown really.
Alison: Yeah! And I think you just highlighted an area for me that can be very relatable for a lot of people that it’s just consistency over time. Speed doesn’t matter so much. Sometimes we hold so tightly to the timeframe of when we want achieve certain goals that when we don’t hit them right in these arbitrary timelines at times, then we really beat ourselves up and that’s where a lot of the doubt comes in. Like, is this really possible? But if we can stay the course and still show up day after day and keep going, it will happen. You just have to let go of the timeline at times.

Taimi: Right! And you’ve helped me do that too. I can put a lot of internal pressure on myself and all of our meetings, not giving up on me. I mean, right from the beginning, we’ve just kept going and going. The consistency has built. And you’d say, you said at the beginning and I was like, okay. And a lot of things you said at the beginning, I was like, okay. Didn’t really penetrate.
But now, even down to the energetic work that the holding, the belief, even when it might not be there, some of the tapping that I do for myself, the nervous system and things that I’ve implemented for my nervous system, even if it’s just like five to 15 minutes every single day, making sure that I get a yoga class in a couple of times a week, that I move my body a couple of times a week. So things will take longer sometimes and it moves slower, but I just keep going.
Alison: You’re growing at the pace of you and that’s most important. And able to keep up with your healthy lifestyle. Otherwise, then you start to feel incongruent, right? But you’re living the work, you’re doing the work that you love so much.
And I think another point that a lot of people really struggle with, especially in terms of wanting it now, is this clarity on how you’re different or the clarity on the niche. Because I remember way back when we really talked a lot about, what do I do? Who am I helping? Do I need a niche? And now, as you’re talking, you can clearly see how you’re different. You run these tests, you help people that maybe have tried western medicine and haven’t gotten the results that you want. You know clearly certain symptoms that you can help progress with. There’s many ways that you differentiate yourself as a practitioner now, combining all these skills of yoga, the genetics, the HTMA, the tapping. So many skills, I’m even missing some, that allow you to be different. But that was built over time as well.
Taimi: Right! And I love to learn. And I’ve always, all my CEUs, we have to get continuing education as a speech pathologist, and I would always gravitate towards anything related to anxiety, because I always needed to understand, a long time ago, my own anxiety, and then realizing that so many people suffer from anxiety, if they know it or they don’t know it. And so I just continued to start picking trainings as this business evolved, on things that I’m passionate about.
Because when I started my yoga training years ago, almost a decade now, I remember, I was contemplating it, because I’m very indecisive, my husband can attest to that. And I was humming and calling if I should do it, and finally, someone said to me, “If you’re passionate about it, you’ll figure it out, and it will turn into something.”
Must Read: Kelli Reed’s Guide to Overcoming Fear and Finding Success in Business
And so when I took that risk, and it has, I think it’s been a little easier every time I find a training. Of course I want to do all the trainings, but when I pick a training and do it, because I try to do at least two a year, it’s where either I need to know for, because if my clients show up with that, and I need to dig deeper, or it’s because I can see how it could tie in, and to what I’m doing now, and it could help people grow in a way they haven’t thought about.
Alison: Yeah! And I think that’s the natural organic way where the niche picks itself, because you’re just naturally, you’re attracting a certain client, and you’re growing information to help that client. So the niche evolves, because then that’s your unique path based upon your unique experience, and now your unique expertise pulled together, where no one else can do this work quite like you’re doing, pulled together from all these different resources.
So you can stand out in a marketplace, even though there are a lot of people helping with anxiety reduction online. There aren’t a lot of people helping with health and GI issues online, but you’re able to speak to them in a very different way, where they’re like, “Oh, I didn’t realize that,” or, “I haven’t tried that before,” or you’re highlighting a root cause that might have been missed.

Taimi: Right, right! And bringing in multiple modalities, because I always start with the physiology looking, I want people to understand they’re not broken, they don’t need to accept this label, there’s nothing wrong with them, because I battled with that for a long time, and I want people to understand, “Look, the physiology has missing parts. Maybe you have a genetic mutation, maybe you’re missing, you have high levels of copper, and your electrolytes aren’t balanced, maybe you have high levels of heavy metals, maybe you have all those things,” and nobody ever taught you how to pay attention to your nervous system, because no one taught me that. It took my yoga mat to figure that out, and being in a really bad place.
So this way I can shorten people’s learning curve for them, and I can give them the tools, starting gas for the physiology, showing them that, “Look, here’s why you might be feeling the way you’re feeling, and then here are some other tools you can start right now while we wait for these test results around managing your nervous system,” because we all know that stress is the underlying beast for every issue, medical issue that we have, and if we can start to manipulate our own body and get tapped into our nervous system, I mean, you know this more than anybody, this is what you did, then things will change.
Alison: Yeah! 100%.

Question to Taimi: So what can you tell the wellness entrepreneurs listening that might be in the place where you were a couple years ago, where you couldn’t imagine having 8K, let alone 9K months? I just remember a conversation where you’re like, 8K, sure, because I was like, that’s a six figure year! And the dream house you live in, because you’re living it right now. Yes? And we’re working towards being in your business full time, we’re building the savings for that and the plan for that now, but also look how far you’ve come. What can you tell to someone who’s on the path right now, and maybe they’re doubting, will it work for them?
Taimi: Right. Well they need to hire you immediately. They have to! Because I can think about the number of times we’ve probably wasted, I shouldn’t say wasted, but the amount of conversations we had, or I was like, is this right, I don’t know, even if I was hitting, starting to grow, and the self-doubt, which has always been a struggle. So, again, really having someone to pull you out, because there’s so many things, there’s so many parts to owning a business, and I don’t think you realize it, at least I didn’t realize it until I got in it.
Alison: I didn’t either.
Taimi: Right? And so you just think, “I’m going to help people, it’ll be a lot of work.” And balancing it against my job, so having the time, another brain to collaborate with, that cares, that really sees your potential, because there’d be times too, I’d even ask you like, is this viable, like is this even a business, you know?
And so, trusting, and again, it’s just the guidance that you offered me. So people, definitely, you need to have somebody in your corner, because doing it alone, it doesn’t matter how independent or savvy you are, you need a coach, somebody who’s been down the path before you to help steer, help you steer the right direction.
Alison: Yeah! I love that. And I mean, I have my own coaches too, because for that same reason.

Question to Taimi: And in another area where I’ve really seen you grow and blossom, and evolve, and learn is social media. Fun, fun social media. So, because you’re showing up on camera so much more, and more confidence, and finding your flow, and your rhythm with that. So can you tell us a little bit about that evolution?
Taimi: Yeah, I’m not even sure how it evolved. I know in the beginning, I was just like, “Oh, this is what I’m supposed to be doing, no clue.” And over time, as we wrote our emails together, because again, I would like to just get on and lecture and give information, and like I’m in some sort of lecture hall, you helped me, the more practice every week, to meld it into something that people actually want to listen to, giving me tips on ideas, just our conversations, then I could start to be more creative. And I think there’s a creative part to me.

And so talking about it and watching you, and then just taking risks, really, putting stuff out there. And then sometimes I’m still, I’ll be honest, sometimes I post and go, so maybe just go like a few people and then get off, because it’s, I mean, do you remember when I said to you, I just want a business based on referrals, like in a perfect world, yes, but I love to not be on social media, of course, but that’s not the reality of the way it’s structured. And it can be really fun.
And I’m still growing and it’s still an area that I continue to need to work at, but definitely more comfortable, because I think as I’ve grown, and I’ve gotten more confident in seeing all these clients improve, I want to tell it, shout it from the rooftops. Knowing my own story, that what practitioners had said to me when I was struggling with debilitating anxiety, and sometimes I look back and I’m like, “Wow, I can’t believe I’m balancing all these things, like how did that person, never would have believed it, that old version.”
So the business has also been cool because, most days, because it’s grown me as a person, it’s made me tougher, it’s made me think strategically, which was never not a strength, I’m more like again, logic, facts, information. It’s blossomed my creativity. So it’s really been a bonus personally I’ve grown to.

Alison: Yeah! A ton. And I think what you say is so relatable because I think a lot of people fear that they have to be on social media, like with their phone glued to their hand, but you just, you say like, you’re honest, like sometimes I post and I just get off the platform. Sometimes you got to do that, I do that myself, but you’re consistent, and you don’t post every day, but you’re consistent how you show up.
And especially like right now, you’re coming into the beginning of the school year. So we talked about a plan of like creating a storage bank, which we didn’t get to create as much as we wanted, and there might be some weeks in the beginning of the school year where you don’t post as much as you did in the summertime. However, you’re still showing up consistently and making it work for you. There’s an ebb and flow with it.
Taimi: Right! I think it’s helped me to drop perfectionism because I definitely was a perfectionistic person. And when you start putting stuff on social media, that falls away. And also it’s built a thick skin because now I can be, I always would worry about what other people think, being a people pleaser. And that feeds right into anxiety. And now I’m like, “I’m okay, I’m over here. Like this is what I believe in. And if you’d like to learn about it, I’d love to share it. And if not, then just unfollow me or mute me.” And that’s okay. We can hold, we can still, you know, say hi to each other on the street, even if we might not hold the same belief about health.
Alison: Yeah, 100%. Yeah! Because you have gotten some comments that have been triggering and we had to work through that or some disappointments with that where people have said certain things or may have disagreed with your perspective. But you have a lot of knowledge to share and you do help a lot of people. And everyone is entitled to their perspective.
Taimi: Absolutely! Right, right. And it’s just information, a different way maybe to think about health or anxiety if you haven’t been able to find great success. So it gives people hope.
I think that’s what, when I was struggling, I had people in my corner that gave me hope. And so beliefs are the foundation of everything. And I want to help people maybe open up their belief state about how they look at themselves. And that’s what this business has done for me. It’s really, because I really enjoy helping. I really enjoy talking about health, watching people grow and change like I did and improve. And I mean, we’re always, I will forever be a student. I will forever be trying to improve and grow. And so most of my client base, that’s who I attract. I attract and like kind of nerdy people that want the information, hopefully too, because I love to tell them all the details of the inner workings so they can understand the why behind it as best as I can deliver it.
Alison: Yeah, yeah, I love that. Spoken like a true seeker.
Question to Taimi: So do you have any words of wisdom for people that are on the journey to keep them going, taking steps every day that they plan to show up and work, not that they have to work weekends and such, but to just keep them going consistently?
Taimi: Right! Well, you definitely need a higher health and you need her support. You need, and you know, you’ll tell people, like if you’re like yesterday, you’re like, “Taimi, you know what your clients want.” I’m like, “Oh yeah, right, I do.” You’re honest, but in a way that is caring and compassionate. And if you really believe in it, then you have to keep going. I think, like I said, in some ways, all those conversations were wasted and all the doubt, but maybe they were a part of what they had to be.
Alison: You had to work through it.
Taimi: Yeah. Right. So keep going and keep going after information that makes your heart happy, because then it’s probably your special gift that other people need from you.
Alison: Yes, exactly, I love that. And that’s what’ll differentiate you from everyone else. And it can be scary.
Like I remember when I was one of the first therapists, physical therapists combining yoga and physical therapy. Like I had colleagues and other physical therapists tell me like, “Oh, that’s like granola and hippie and out there kind of stuff. That’s woo stuff. No one wants that or people are going to get hurt or that’s not evidence-based,” but I knew in my heart is it worked for me. Like that was a missing piece that a lot of people weren’t getting.
Taimi: Right. And that can be hard, I think still.
That’s maybe where the self-doubt will come up because I can see a lot of times like the entrepreneur journey is like we’ve talked about. It’s lonely and it can be scary. And then I’m bringing information in that’s way different and really new and not widely talked about. I mean, yoga, yes, but all the other aspects, they’re not. And health is a confusing topic for, so that’s why I love the data from these tests. And if we start at the smallest level of the cell, we can’t go wrong because it’s only going to get better from that point.
People Also Read: Steps to Transition Your Clinic to 100% Cash-Based
Alison: Yeah! And I think it’s so important as western medicine practitioners, I really feel that a lot of them are trying their best. It’s just a broken system where they’re just overburdened with so many patients and so many requests that they can’t look at these health details as long and as detailed as you can.
Taimi: Right, it does. It takes a lot of time. That’s why my packages are where they’re at right now. Price-wise, we worked a lot on that because the hours, not only the interfacing time with clients, but the report writing, the research, the networking that I’ve created with different doctors and MPs, it’s a lot of behind the scenes. So sometimes when you haven’t seen me on social media for a while, that’s where I am. I know this is in a book somewhere, trying to figure it out and write it up for a client so they can make sense of it.
Alison: Yeah, yeah! I think that’s another great topic is packages and how they’ve evolved for you because we started somewhere like bringing your testing in and we had to figure out, “Okay, if we do one test, how many sessions do they need? How long does it take you to create a report? How long does it take you to analyze it and then give the information?” Because in the beginning, you were wanting to do it all in a very short, compact amount of time. And then, correct me if I’m wrong, but you’re like, “Oh my gosh, no, there’s a lot more time involved in this.”
Taimi: Yeah, yeah! And especially with the HTMA test because as the body adapts to the minerals and to the binder, there can be some real perks reactions, meaning sensations that you might not want to feel for a short amount of time because the body has been missing these special ingredients or they’ve been struggling with symptoms and the detoxing of that can be a little tricky.
But also too, I want to help people. You can’t fix your nervous system overnight either. So once I bring in the minerals and the binder, I need those sessions to also help shift their nervous system and get in and feel the sensations of their body. So it definitely needs to be for a length of time that we have to work together for those shifts to happen.
Alison: Yeah, so you’ve gone from selling like one test and one, maybe two sessions to now selling packages of 12 and sometimes two tests.
Taimi: Yeah, yeah! So right! We went down actually, we figured it out, right? I have a smaller package, my mini align, the six sessions, and then I have my larger package, the one-to-one align right now. 10 sessions is where I’m kind of holding for a little bit to see, maybe clients will need more of these.
The tests, especially the genetics, the 3×4, it’s a very involved test. It’s cool because once you take it, you only have to take it one time, but the information will be there. So as your health evolves, you can go back and you can look at, “All right, well, we focused on my mood pathway but maybe now we need to focus on my hormone pathway, or all of a sudden my doctor said my vitamin D is low. Okay, well, look, that’s because you have this snip, a misspelling, your VDR is not as strong.” So we then work together to figure out, and I have some very specific protocols on how to target certain areas as we move through those tests.
Must Read: How to succeed without the exhaustion and burn out
Alison: Yeah, and we shifted more from, that’s right, the number of sessions to like the length of time. So now the package is four months, 10 sessions, and it gives you ample time to analyze, to go over the information with them, for them to implement it into their lifestyle and start to see progress.
Taimi: Right! And we just did that. So that was a big shift because, when you do something for a lit, it’s a lot of trial and error as well. Like all this information and then trial and error and everybody’s different. So I have to go with where the client is showing up to.
Alison: Yeah, and that’s the whole reason why you’re in the business, right? Is because it’s client led, heart focused. The whole point is to help people with their health and wellness. And so you’re doing it by shifting dependent upon what the client needs.
Taimi: Absolutely.
Alison: And what allows you to not overwork and be overburdened and burnout essentially too.
Taimi: Right! And that’s been a constant game of trial and error too. Some weeks I’m better than others at that. But again, I think it’s, that’s also what’s led me to find certain tools to add to my business because people are busy and people don’t really love to slow down. And so when I try to teach people that they need to, I’m also, a lot of times I feel like I should be standing in the mirror talking to myself because it’s things that I, some weeks have to work harder at than others, but I consistently will build them in. So then eventually I can say, “Hey, look, this is what I do. It’s easy, it’s like brushing your teeth. You can do these things too.” You take the time to build it in.
Alison: Yeah, sometimes the biggest work that we need to learn ourselves is also the work that we work with our clients on as well.
Taimi: Yeah, that’s, for me, that’s definitely, I’ve seen that evolve.
Alison: Yeah, me too. Well, thank you so much for sharing your story, all the words of wisdom.

Question to Taimi: Are there any other parting words that you want to share with any entrepreneur that is on this path that you’re on?
Taimi: Don’t give up and if you don’t believe in yourself, you need to hire Alison. You should hire Alison anyways or find someone else that is going to believe in you. Because there’ll be days that it’ll be easy to do that and there’ll be days that are hard. But if you have someone like Alison to lean into, you can keep going.
Alison: Thank you so much. It’s been a pleasure working with you. I am so happy for all your success. And I love seeing this new beautiful room that you’re in in your house. And you just deserve all this because you really work hard for your clients. You really do. And I know you care about them so much.
Taimi: Thank you. I really couldn’t have done it without you. Like I’m starting to get teared up. I would have quit like three months in. So I have big goals and I keep watching your big goals. And so it gives me hope. Like it gave me hope that day in Prana when I found out who you were and what you did. I don’t know how many years it’s been. I’ve been amassed for four, so at least five years, it’s pretty amazing.
Alison: Well, big virtual hug to you. I can’t wait. Five figure months is next. Full time in your business is next. You got and it’s going to happen for sure.
Taimi: Thank you, Alison. I appreciate everything.
Alison: Yeah, well, thanks for coming on and updating everyone on where you are in your journey. I love it!
