You’re Not Missing Expertise—You’re Missing Packaging: The Wellness Practitioner’s Guide to Selling Your Knowledge

Table of Contents

Here’s the truth many wellness practitioners face: You’ve been in your field for years, maybe even a decade or more. You’ve helped countless people. Certifications are stacked together like a Jenga tower. You’ve solved problems Google can’t solve, that ChatGPT can’t address, that took other practitioners years to figure out (or they still haven’t figured out).

You’re the missing piece people find after saying “I’ve tried everything.” Yet you help them.

But when someone messages you on Instagram asking about working with you, you go blank. Like a deer in headlights. Or like when someone asks what you want for dinner—absolutely nothing comes to mind.

Or the opposite happens: you give them a laundry list of all your certifications, all the ways you can help them. They become overwhelmed and respond: “Oh, great. I’ll think about it and let you know.”

Here’s the wild part: You’re not missing knowledge. You’re not missing expertise. You’re missing the packaging and the positioning.

You just haven’t put your expertise in that box yet. This can be fixed in the next 15 minutes.

The Common Pattern: Too Much Knowledge, No Clear Container

What appears constantly in DMs and consultation calls:

A physical therapist with years of experience. A yoga teacher with 12 years practice. A massage therapist who’s basically a walking encyclopedia of the human body. A health coach who transformed her own health and life.

When asked “What do you sell online?” or “Tell me about your program—how do people work with you?”—they say one of two things:

Option 1: “I don’t know what to sell.”

Option 2: Two pages listing all these different offers.

Here’s the compassionate truth: no one taught you this. You went to school to be a practitioner, not a course creator. You were taught to assess, treat, discharge—not build curriculum and put price tags on it.

Here’s what’s actually happening: You’re sitting on a gold mine of expertise, essentially locking it away where it just gathers dust. Meanwhile, people who need your help are going to other practitioners only because they need help and don’t realize you can help them.

Somewhere in the back of your mind, there’s a nagging feeling: There has to be a better way.

There is. It’s just not as complicated as the online business world makes it seem.

Many talented wellness practitioners struggle to articulate their value online not because they lack expertise, but because they’ve never learned how to package knowledge for digital consumption. Learning the expertise extraction method transforms years of clinical experience into clear, sellable online offerings.

The Expertise Extraction Method

The solution is what’s called the expertise extraction method—a straightforward way of saying: take what’s already in your head, the knowledge acquired through years of practice, the things done on autopilot with clients every single day, and turn that into online offers.

The Key Insight About Online Programs vs. Clients

This question comes up constantly: “Am I selling an online program or am I signing clients?”

Here’s the critical understanding: It’s the same thing.

Selling an online program—whether it’s a DIY independent program or one-to-one—both involve clients. When helping people with health and wellness transformation, whether they’re doing it themselves through a portal where you walk them through steps (hands-off for you) or you’re hands-on doing virtual one-to-one sessions or a hybrid, there are countless ways to help people online.

You have a client because you have a human being with a problem—a health problem needing solving.

The Outdated DIY Course Model

Most practitioners developing online programs think: I’ll develop this course, put all my expertise and knowledge from all these decades and years into it, then people can go through it at their own pace and get that knowledge.

Here’s the truth: That model’s a little outdated and wasn’t made specifically for practitioners.

Your audience doesn’t want to consume knowledge. They’re not seekers of the human body, health, wellness, and physiology like you are. They’re busy people with busy lives.

Consider this from your own perspective: If you had a financial problem, you’d just want your financial advisor to figure it out and tell you what to do. You don’t want to know all the nuances of the stock market—you want to know enough to keep eyes on your money. You want their expertise and their shortcut.

Or a plumber coming to your house: you don’t need to know the intricacies of all your piping and what’s backing up. You just want to know: Can the plumber solve the problem? What do you need to do to help? What’s the fastest way to get the job done?

That’s how your clients think about their health and wellness.

Sometimes the quickest, simplest, most streamlined and effective way for someone to have health and wellness problems solved is to just work with you one-to-one.

If you have a small audience and you’re looking to create online revenue quickly, it’s a win-win. Someone messages on Instagram. Response: “Great, I can help you. I have a three-month one-to-one program. Eight calls. You also get these protocols—X, Y, Z. $2,000. Done.”

The One-to-One Resistance (And How to Heal It)

Many practitioners shy away from one-to-one, which is truthfully the simplest way to make money online when starting to transition online. The only reason for resistance: they’ve done one-to-one for so many years, they’re burned out and tired.

They want their schedule back. They want their freedom back.

This is completely understandable. Personal experience validates this completely—having been in that exact place, then receiving coaching years ago to go back to one-to-one and heal that relationship before moving to group programs.

It was really hard coaching at the time. The resistance was strong. After being a one-to-one practitioner for over 20 years, it felt like due diligence and time had been served.

But significant investment had been made in that mastermind, so the coaching was taken. It was genuinely difficult to heal from that burnout narrative. But healing happened.

Now, years later, one-to-one work still happens and it’s genuinely loved. There’s no feeling of being trapped by time because there are so many ways to leverage time in an online program where sessions aren’t the only thing bringing results.

That’s the critical understanding for online programs: there are countless different ways to help people get results. At the end of the day, clients care about one thing—whether they do it themselves, do it with you in some version, or you do it for them by giving protocols, they don’t care. They just want results achieved in a way that fits their budget.

Understanding how to structure online programs so sessions aren’t the only value delivery mechanism transforms practitioner capacity and client results. Learning to leverage multiple delivery methods creates sustainability while maintaining transformation quality.

Creating Online Programs: The Packaging Framework

If you’re creating an online program, think about packaging from this standpoint: What’s the result I want to give these people? What’s my audience size?

Audience size impacts pricing. If you have a smaller audience and want to hit $10K+ months online, you need a higher-ticket program. Unless you’re going to spend significant money on ads.

If you have a $200 DIY program, you need to get traffic there somehow—Google Ads, Facebook ads (depending on audience and where reviews exist), Instagram boosting. Traffic and eyeballs need to get on that offer somehow.

Look at the numbers and ensure it’s like a puzzle where everything works together.

Even if doing one-to-one, there are still countless ways to leverage time. You could create a membership. Memberships are powerful—you can include classes (yoga classes, somatic classes, whatever you offer).

But remember: People aren’t taking classes just to take classes. They want classes for specific results.

Make classes very unique and positioned. For example: the Manifest and Move class—somatics, manifestation, and gentle movement/restorative work. It’s a unique methodology specific for wellness entrepreneurs and wellness practitioners.

Niching that way allows very specific messaging about benefits entrepreneurs want to hear: they can come to this class, think more clearly, have more energy, be more productive. The manifestation component is very specific to goals entrepreneurs want to set monthly.

Very specific messaging attracts more people versus “come to my somatics class”—which practitioners know about, but general audiences don’t yet understand.

The Transformation Clarity Exercise

To figure out what you actually sell, grab a notes app or piece of paper and answer this question:

What’s the ONE transformation I create for clients over and over and over again?

The most common client. Your ideal client. The one you love working with.

Not a laundry list. Not “I help people with pain, stress, movement, mindset, sleep, digestion, world peace.”

One. Primary transformation.

What do they come to you for and leave better with? Think of consultation calls. Think of the complaints when someone first starts working with you. It’s in there—you just have to look through it.

With that result and transformation you help someone achieve, there are many options for how to deliver:

Option 1: Membership with Multiple Components

  • Classes with deliverables
  • Live group calls
  • Option to offer one one-to-one call monthly (price higher)

Option 2: Group Coaching Program

Standalone group program or hybrid of in-person and online with added touchpoints.

Remember: They’re not buying sessions. They’re buying a result.

Option 3: Done-With-You Program

More one-to-one focused. Guide clients through structured process over 8-12 weeks with calls, check-ins, and resources.

Option 4: Self-Paced Digital Course (Netflix Model)

Client buys, gets access. But remember: they still want a result.

Self-paced is lower ticket—usually $99, $197, $297 on the higher end. If you want $10K months, you need high volume of people getting through it.

Option 5: Membership (Recurring Revenue)

Can be $97/month, $297/month. Charge higher when adding one-to-one calls. Figure out how many people need to enroll, what to include so they get results.

The One-Sentence Offer Framework

Before building anything, you need to say this out loud without stumbling:

“I help [X] achieve [what outcome/result] in [X timeframe] through [X method].”

Example: “I help physical therapists build online programs so they can hit $10K months without burning out their bodies in six months.”

Sound familiar? That’s the positioning.

What will yours be?

Addressing Common Objections

“I don’t know if my stuff can translate online”

Remember: all of this is just problems to solve. Countless practitioners have been guided through translating skills online. It’s simply a problem to solve.

Put the result you want to help clients achieve (or results you’ve helped clients achieve in person) into this framework:

“Through using my hands, manual work, massages, myofascial release, I’ve helped clients release headaches because that’s the common client who keeps coming.”

Work it through with ChatGPT to figure out your online methodology for creating that same result. Talk physiology, talk anatomy with AI: “I usually use my hands for this very specific thing. How can that be replicated online?”

Through somatics, breathwork, visualization, mindset, holding space, down-regulating—whatever you’re doing with your hands can be translated online.

If you genuinely feel it can’t, create a membership that’s primarily online where clients get one session with you monthly in person. Price accordingly—it’ll dramatically reduce your in-person session numbers.

“I don’t have time for one-to-one calls”

Countless practitioners have been supported in fitting one-to-ones into schedules. It doesn’t have to be weekly one-to-ones. Flexibility exists in structure.

Learning how to translate hands-on clinical work into effective online delivery without losing therapeutic impact is one of the most valuable skills wellness practitioners can develop. Mastering the online translation process opens geographic boundaries while maintaining (or even improving) client outcomes.

Your Next Step: Create That One Sentence

This week, focus on:

Think of your expertise. Use AI to help. Use what clients are requesting to inform it. Think of the result.

What is the simplest way for you and simplest for your clients to achieve that online?

Not selling sessions. Actually packaging a program that leads them to a health and wellness result solving a problem they want solved.

Listen to previous podcast episodes labeled “online offer” or “online program” for deeper exploration of these concepts through different angles.

Hi, I'm Dr. Alison McLean, DPT

I believe wellness practitioners deserve to live the freedom they teach.

Not someday. Not after one more certification or one more full caseload. Now. We entered this work to help people heal — and somewhere along the way, we became the most burned out people in the room. Seeing clients back to back, skipping meals, missing family moments, quietly wondering if this is as good as it gets. What they didn't teach us in school is that the business model we inherited was never designed to give us freedom. It was designed to keep us busy. There's a version of your practice that doesn't require your sacrifice as the cost of admission. One where your income isn't capped by your calendar, your clients get your best, and you actually have a life outside the treatment room.

That's the world I'm building — and I'd love to help you build it too.
