Hello there, wellness entrepreneur! Welcome back.

Today, we’re going to talk about No Dance Strategies For Instagram And Why.

Because reels are really continuing to blow up on Instagram. Instagram introduced them a while back and yes, it was a lot easier to go viral back then with a reel. However, you still have a lot of potential these days! Instagram is still really favoring pushing out reels versus carousel or more static type content these days.

So you still have a lot of opportunities to get your brand, your business, what you do, what you care about, your philosophies out there in the world so you can help more people. And you don’t have to do it in an inauthentic way, meaning if you don’t feel comfortable to dance on Instagram, you don’t have to dance on Instagram.

In fact, in today’s blog, we’re going to go over a bunch of other types of content that you can create on Instagram where it feels in alignment with you because the whole point is when you believe that there are people in your audience out there right now, which there are, that need help with wellness and health and you’re the person to help them because that is true.

Working on Mindset Blocks

And you have a way where you can work through any mindset blocks that you might have in terms of showing up, feeling forced to present content in a way that just doesn’t feel like you or isn’t in alignment which makes you feel even more vulnerable, then you’re going to post a lot less because you have a lot more like mental sludge to work through to actually get one post out in the world. What happens when you’re going through a mental sludge, what does that look like? Freezing when you go to post, taking long periods and breaks off.

For example, one of my clients when she first started working with me, she was posting consistently and then she started having niche drama of, “I’m not really sure who my ideal client is.” She knew what they were really struggling with. She actually had a lot of market research on her client but she wasn’t sure what to say on Instagram. She even hired a marketing agency to help her post and those posts were actually doing worse than her own post. So, she was feeling frozen. She knows her audience. She actually has a lot of ideas, a super creative, very intelligent entrepreneur, but she wasn’t posting because she felt stuck.

Also Read: Strategic 90-Day Planning for Wellness Entrepreneurs

So that is an example of mental sludge and when we were able to work on that, and here’s the truth: we didn’t solve her niche drama right in that moment but instead, what we focused on was content that spoke to her person and categories or pillars that she teaches on in her programs, how she could bring that work into her Instagram content and then she just was on fire! Just started posting a lot of content and we refined it like, “How can we use hooks to capture this,” or, “What themes are her audience wanting to hear? How can she do more of that there?”

And so she went from not posting at all to posting every day, sometimes multiple times a day, and her visibility really increased from 300 views, 400 views, maybe 600 views to now 1,000, 2,000 and just had a reel get 10,000 views because that is I found the precursor to the actual audience growth.

The Three Parts of a Marketing Strategy

Because if we’re looking at the whole strategy of why we’re posting on Instagram in the big picture of your business, it’s a marketing strategy that is short term, meaning, “Okay, if we put a whole pin in this conversation for a moment, there’s three, my coach teaches it this way, DL teaches it this way.” There’s three parts of your overall marketing strategy meaning there’s short term strategy where you can go out and post a piece of content like an e-mail or a reel on Instagram or a story and you can get a client within 24 or 48 hours. That’s for sure happened to me.

You can have long-term content that really utilizes SEO strategy that sometimes takes a bit of time for you to get ranked like YouTube or blogs or a podcast. I find a lot of people listen to my podcast for a while before they actually become a client of mine, not always, but most of the time, YouTube and my blogs, sometimes I’ll have a video on YouTube that gets ranked very well. I’m not really spending a lot of time in my YouTube strategy, so perhaps that could go faster if I was spending a lot more time, but blogs for sure! Now I’ve been blogging SEO, optimizing it now for almost close to two years and now it’s taken a bit of time where the first year I didn’t really see any growth in that and now I’m seeing more growth in that.

And then the third area is, collaborations, referrals, that sort of strategy where you have less control over when someone’s going to give you a referral or if you want to collaborate with someone like a yoga studio or a fitness studio or someone that has a similar audience but does complimentary work. You can’t always say, “Oh, well, I know that I would like to do a workshop in four weeks,” but that person that you’re collaborating with, they might be busy or a yoga studio, they might be booked for three months, you might not actually be able to do that event for several months down the road.

So the strategy, if you want to get clients sooner rather than later, that you really do have control over fully is Instagram. And so if you’re going to double down on this free strategy that you can both grow your audience, I’m in a mass Instagram mastermind and some of my peers there have grown their e-mail list to thousands in weeks because they’ve really, it takes a while to get the growth on Instagram, months to figure out the content and repurposing what works and themes and that sort of thing which we’re going to go over here, but once that is lit and you’re really growing your audience consistently on Instagram, then you have the potential to grow your e-mail list and create more clients quicker.

The Strategy Of What’s Really Working on Instagram: Reels

So if we look at the strategy of what is really working on Instagram, again, that brings us back to the reels which is why I’m encouraging you today to find aligned Instagram reel strategies that you can create quickly where you’re not looking at your phone and freezing and being like:

I have no idea what to say or

I don’t want to do a talking head video or

I don’t have makeup on or the right clothes

Like there are so many ways that you can use already videos that you have in your phone to create reels that actually either both grow your audience or convert because we’ll go over the difference here today also on growth versus conversion type strategy. And I do have another blog on that in the past, so you can go look at that content strategy blog as well.

The Four Different Types of Content on Instagram

Okay, the four strategies of different types of content that I’m going to teach you right now is what I teach my clients in the Awakened Business Coaching Program. It’s the four main content strategies for Instagram, for reels specifically.

Today, we’re talking about combined with your core teaching pillars and the seven S’s of the 100K Marketing Strategies. I help my clients map all this out onto a table so they have content ideas for months.

Today specifically we’re gonna be talking about the four different strategies. I’ll give you an overview right now and the seven S’s which for example are the successes that your client might have that they want to achieve, the desires that they want to achieve, the struggles that they’re encountering, the solution that you offer, the structure, your core philosophies and teaching pillars that you teach that differentiate you from everyone else out there in the world, client stories that you can tell of client successes that have achieved you can go over those.

Your own transformational stories as well as senses, what does a client need to feel, where are they feeling right now, for example frozen in, stuck and what do they want to feel after working with you, maybe more confident in their body, confident in their health choices and knowing that they have a process to help decide what’s best for the health for them, for example, so coming into the senses of tapping into the emotions as well.

Must Read: Maximizing Attendance: How to Fill Your Workshops Quickly

So those S’s are going to be brought into these four different types of Instagram content strategies.

So for example, the first one is growth content. You want content that has the potential for going viral to reach more people so then new people that aren’t following you can see the reel and be like, “Oh, I resonate with this,” and then hopefully tap follow and become a follower and as so you can grow your audience, connection type content. So we’ll break these down each of these connection type content, conversion type content and then also content that positions you as an expert.

There’s no perfect ratio being like, okay, if you’re going to post five times a week that one out of five has to be growth. So you’re going to figure out your flow and the rhythm of bringing in stories, for example, or speaking to the struggles that someone might have or the desires that they’re wanting to achieve or speaking to your own story.

You’re going to flow through these four different categories of types of reels that you can make in your own rhythm. But you do want to be sure like, if you’re posting 10 pieces of content, however long that takes you, hopefully within a couple of weeks, that you are hitting on each of these areas because a growth type content, for example, will speak to someone that is colder to your world and the work that you do or possibly they’re going to be becoming more problem aware, aware that they actually have this struggle that’s going on. And they’re going to be a little colder in the customer journey of moving towards taking that next step, for example, to schedule a consult call with you first.

Someone that might be following you for a while and knows, they hear the name of your program, for example, they know the style of work that you do, they know the type of clients that they work with, they’ve heard your story, your client’s stories and now they just need a particular type of post speaking to a specific struggle that they’re having right now that they want to get solved urgently and you highlight something in your program, for example, that solves that particular struggle, that’s going to be more of a conversion type content for that person so that they take action now and book that call with you if that’s their next step.

So you want different types of content to speak to different clients in their stages on this customer journey from being cold, maybe just finding you and your program and understanding their problem to then funneling down to that very warm or hot follower that’s been following you that knows that their problem exists, that knows that you’re the solution to their problem and now they’re ready to take action now.

So you want your content in the reel specifically stories is a great place for conversion and that can be a whole other blog on how to sprinkle in stories for conversion but I do post on my feed, if you go to igniteurwellnessbusiness on Instagram, that’s my handle, you’ll see on my feed all this different types of content sprinkled throughout.

So each post that I make speaks to one person, one problem, one desire that they’re wanting to speak to, one emotion that they’re hoping to transform and one specific type of style of content that I’m geared towards, whether they be newer for growth style or warmer for conversion style.

Okay, so let’s break down what are some examples of each of these four different styles of content. Now, this is not talking about, we’ll bring in the format style of Instagram, which is more, are you going to be posting the format of the types of Instagram reels that you can post our B-roll?

People Also Read: Take Your Wellness Business to New Heights with Personalized Mentorship

So for example, using footage in your camera roll that you already have and then you might use a filter like low resolution to darken it and then you’re just putting text over it. That’s a really easy way to make a reel. Some of my most popular reels that have been really quick to make, five minutes or less, is remixing a reel using some stickers.

So like, for example, I have a sticker in there with Adele singing, one of her songs or a reel that had gone viral for someone else using an animated movie. So there’s different ways that you can remix viral content or you can even create your own stories, stickers, and put your own background on them using stories, story cutouts, actually, there’s a way to do that.

So again, there are different types of format, whether you’re using a B-roll, you’re doing a talking head, meaning you’re just talking to the camera or you’re remixing viral or sticker type content. Those can be layered into each of these four styles or categories of themes of your intention of why you’re posting. Are you intending, hopefully, for this reel to grow your audience by going viral? Are you intending to connect with your audience and move them down that customer journey? Are you intending to get a consult or getting someone to sign up for your workshop or a yoga class? Is it more of a conversion style of content? Or are you intending to position yourself as the expert, the go-to person in your field for that specific problem that your audience might have, again, to move them along that customer journey?

So you see there’s different layers in this Instagram strategy where when you’re focusing on one layer, one type of format, one specific type of style, speaking to one person, one problem, one emotion, one solution you offer, one part of your framework, it just really dials it down. So each reel that you’re putting out into the world is very specific, and that gives you tons of content for days and, again, helps to move that follower from becoming that they don’t even know you now to a follower to eventually hopefully buying from you so you can grow your online wellness business to five-figure months consistently. That’s literally how I did this.

Okay, and it becomes part of, again, your overall strategy in your business with those three different other types of marketing strategies or if you do workshops, which is another short-term strategy or long-term, depending on if you’re collaborating or when you can schedule your own workshop, all these different layers work together where people are able to come into your world at different times and then sprout and become a buyer at any moment, depending on where they are in the journey.

And you never have to feel attached to one person that sends you a direct message and say, “Hey, I’m super interested in working with you,” and then you have a conversation back and forth and you actually send your consultation link, but then they never book, right? You don’t have to be attached to them and kind of feel like you have to bug them all the time or wondering what’s happened. You just know that another person can come along at any minute when you’re continuing to post the content out in the world.

  1. Growth Type Content

Okay, so now we’ll break it down specifically where growth style of content is a type of Instagram reel that has a potential to go viral, meaning that you can get 10,000 views, 100,000 views, million or more type views, and the content is structured for virality, meaning that it has a very compelling hook.

The reel itself is often shorter in length. Right now, Instagram is posting or favoring content that is about six to 10 seconds long, which is quick, right? Often, my clients, when they first come to me, are like, “Well, how do I really demonstrate my expertise or my knowledge or show that I’m this legitimate practitioner? I’ve been working brick and mortar for 10 plus years, but online, how do I really stand out in 10 seconds?”

When you break all this down, this is how, especially with the expert content, but the reason why right now, Instagram is favoring pushing content out, meaning you have a chance to have your reel be shown to people that aren’t already following you, so non-followers. When your reels, they’re watched at least 80% through. So, for example, if you have a nine-second reel, people are watching at least eight seconds of it. And then two other criteria are the amount of saves that it has and then the amount of shares.

So if people are sharing the content, so if one or all of these areas are really taking off for a reel, then Instagram will push it out to more people and it has a chance to go viral. So, for example, reels that have done really well in terms of visibility are, if I have a B-roll type content, usually I’ll use a workshop or me working in the she-shed or my own yoga practice, I usually batch content and then I have a folder in my phone that says, reel, reel videos, label it B-roll. And then on Mondays, when I’m crafting my content for the week, I can just go in there and select a B-roll.

And then what has the potential to have a piece of that type of content go viral is typically the hook and if I’m unable to, for example, write copy over the video in the actual Instagram reel to have them be compelled to watch or the scenes are flashing in the reel in such a way that they’re watching the reel all the way through, then that has a chance for it to be pushed out. If the hook really grabs them and they get sucked in and then I have scenes of the reel itself, like where it’s captivating enough or the copy is captivating enough, so they watch it the whole time, then that does really well.

The other things that do well are stickers or remixes of video that have gone viral for other people. So for example, when I’m researching growth style content, I actually have a folder in my Instagram. I have a folder in my Instagram account that you can save content that’s created viral content. So I’m researching, sometimes it’s showing up on my home page in Instagram, just viral content, popular content, and I’m looking at the language used or I’m getting ideas of funny stickers or GIFs, that type of thing where I can hit save and how can I repurpose it? And sometimes it is from other business coach type people or Instagram strategists. I’m not going out there and copying their content word from word. I’m using either a hook that worked really well for them or a sticker that worked well or a GIF or an idea.

For example, a reel that did really well recently for me was taken from an entirely different niche than me. It was the idea of the reel was my children are missing out by not going to public school. And that creator had scenes of their children playing outside or reading with their dad that really spoke to my heart of this connection I want to have with my own daughter. And I have no desire to homeschool my child, but as I was watching that reel, I actually considered it. And I was like, “Wow, that was a powerful piece of content.” And what made it work? It was this theme that my child is missing out on something, but actually they’re not. What they’re missing out on are these potential moments of connection with their parents or being able to play outdoors instead of doing worksheets, right? They were highlighting the kind of negative side, I guess, of public school and what they’re missing out in real life by going to public school, for example. So I thought, “Okay, well, how can I create that piece of content for myself using a similar theme?”

So I have a lot of B-roll footage of me interacting with Kaylee or Kaylee interacting with my husband or Kaylee being in the she-shed, Kaylee being part of podcast videos, teaching yoga classes, all because she sees me as an entrepreneur showing up in my business every day. So I created a piece of content that, with a compelling hook, that was like my child’s missing out on what my child is missing out on by me being a mom who’s also an entrepreneur. And then I said I used to fear that or feel guilty that my child was missing out on life or connections with me or time with me because I was an entrepreneur and I flipped it and I actually showed, “Well, if I wasn’t an entrepreneur, she’d be missing out on these other moments, chances of getting confidence, teaching yoga, for example, blah, blah, blah.” You can actually go to Instagram and see that piece of content.

But the point is, is I took a viral piece of content in a completely other niche and I loved how it stirred the emotions. And I thought, “Okay, how can I recreate this for myself?” And now that it’s done well, I can see where even when I’m describing it here, where I can make the content even tighter. I can do it even better. Since it did resonate with my audience, I’ll probably make another reel on that very topic, just tightening up the copy, tightening up the frames that I used, making it a little bit more clear and compelling. So you can reuse your own content.

I have another save folder that it’s content of mine that has done well that I want to repeat it and I just want to make it better. So there are some ideas to help you get some growth style content. And remember, you really want to focus on making sure that it’s watchable and compelling the whole way through, or that people are engaging with it in different ways where they’re saving it or sharing it. And that will also help for it to become viral.

And then the call to action at the end of the post is more, “If this resonates with you,” or “You want this health result, then go give me a follow.” And you can see I do that in my content.

  1. Connection Type Content

So the second style of Instagram content is the connection. And that is going to help nurture them in that customer journey where they’re getting to know you a little bit more and you can tell your story.

Now, often this is another area where entrepreneurs get hung up because they’re like, “Well, I don’t want to share all my life details.” Or they focus only on the big transformation, like the big weight loss that they had or the big gut issue that they helped overcome, whatever your own health and wellness transformation was, the back pain that you solved or various issues like that. You can break those transformations down, your own transformations or client stories and transformations into micro transformations.

So instead of talking about the 20-pound weight loss goal you achieve, you can talk about how you just first got started and stuck and figured out a plan that you believed would work. Or for me, you hear me talk about different areas of my own business transformation and growth. For example, right now you’re getting a sneak peek into my own Instagram transformation and growth. Sometimes I talk about my managing a scary health diagnosis with growing a business. You also heard another connection point where I was talking about making sure I have the benefits of being a mom as a wellness entrepreneur with a daughter, how many benefits Kaylee gets from seeing a mom be an entrepreneur, growing her business.

So there’s all these micro stories that you can share as an opportunity to connect with different potential clients stuck at different aspects of their own client journey. So think about and write out all these different types of stories that you can tell. And you can look again on my own Instagram content and consider ways of sharing those stories.

So for example, I might write it in the caption for a short reel. Often if I’m going to do a talking head, it’s going to be that 30 seconds is going to be a longer form content. Those for me typically don’t do well on reels. People don’t watch them all the way through. So I’m going to share that type of content in more of my stories where I’m doing a talking head. That’s a little bit longer, but I have done reels and you’ll see, actually, I think I’m going to post that while at the time of recording this week where I said, you know, my client achieved this goal, whether it was revenue goal or launching an online program, but she didn’t do this, meaning she and I had Xs in my reel where she didn’t overwork. She didn’t have to sacrifice her own wellness practices. Or so there’s different ways in those formats that I described or writing it in the caption that you can connect with your audience, either telling your story or your client’s stories.

And also another layer through that is also speaking to the emotion that they’re having while they’re struggling. Maybe they feel confused or overwhelmed or anxious or even panicked. And what is the specific emotion that they’re desiring to achieve if they work with you? What is the end goal that they can achieve in terms of how they feel day to day?

  1. Expert Type Content

Okay, so the third type of content strategy is the expert type. And I think this is for the wellness entrepreneur specifically a type of content that you naturally gravitate towards where you’re doing a talking head and educating about the pelvic floor and showing up an anatomy model. Or you’re showing different yoga flows for specific purposes or exercises for different purposes.

A lot of people do a lot of expert type content. It’s not just posting a flow to post a flow or an exercise to post an exercise. It’s really relating that type of expert situation whether it’s education or anatomy and combining it more with growth style capabilities.

So what does that mean? It means keeping your exercises and your flows so it’s watchable through the whole way through or keeping it entertaining and engaging the whole way through. Positioning a specific exercise and flow for a specific struggle that they might have or sprinkling in a client story of how they use this specific exercise for a specific purpose. How can, if you’re going to educate, how does this relate to them? Because people on Instagram anyways, they’re there to be entertained or often trying to zone out from the world. It’s not like they wanted an anatomy lecture. That’s not why they showed up for Instagram.

So how can you make it this expert type content from the perspective of the watcher that is on Instagram to be entertained or to connect with you or feel different or have a quick win or an insight? And how can you create it so it’s compelling and watchable all the way through or at least shareable?

And your call to action might be, “Share this with a friend who’s been complaining about their sciatica and needs to hear this today,” or, “Save this for those days when you feel a pain in your bum so you always have exercises to come to help find some relief.” That will help your expert content get more visible.

  1. Conversion Type Content

And then the last type of style of content is conversion type content. And this is more for that warm, hot follow there that is just on the fence of booking a call with you. So this type of content I find when I post it in my feed, I am prepared mentally to know that it’s not going to get as many likes, it’s not going to get as many views because the algorithm is actually trained to search for content that says things like, use the link in the profile to book now, sign up now, register, free, free webinar, all that type of content.

Instagram scans and will flag as conversion type content and won’t post, won’t make it visible or a chance for virality as much because you have to remember it from perspective, they want that type of content, they want people using ads and paying money to them for that type of content and they want to have the audience people stay on Instagram and consume content more so they have a greater chance of getting to an ad.

So the whole point is that they want to keep the follower on Instagram and not to your registration page for the webinar. And here’s the truth too, not everyone is ready to be sold to, right? If someone just follows you and they’re not aware of their problem, they’re not ready to take action right now and that’s okay.

For example, for the business coaching, some people might stumble across my account and never heard of business coaching before and be like, “Oh my gosh, there’s someone that can actually help me strategize all this,” they might take a little bit longer versus I’ve had people that actually told me in a DM, “I’ve been looking for someone exactly like you, I need to book a consult today,” and they do and then they become a client paid and have their first call booked by the end of the week.

So conversion type content is speaking to those warmer people, which there’s just going to be fewer of them in your audience. It’s just the natural numbers game. So remembering when you’re creating conversion type content that it is, Instagram’s not going to favor that. I do have a client that goes viral, even when she has clear calls to action and does conversion type content and she’s found a rhythm that works. So I don’t want to say never, but just mentally prepared if it’s not doing quite as well, that could be why.

So for me, I post a lot of my conversion type content as well as I’m re-sharing my e-mails as a carousel. And again, naturally carousels aren’t doing as well as reels, so I know it’s more conversion type content. So I actually post twice in that day where I’m re-sharing my e-mail as a carousel, but I’m also going to post a reel that day. Or if I have a reel that’s more of a conversion type strategy to get them to book, register for my webinar or something like that, for example, I might post twice in one day. Or if I’m going through a conversion period of a launch or promoting a webinar and then promoting my program, after the webinar I’m going to be posting more to try to sprinkle in growth which keeps my numbers higher, my visibility higher, and make sure that my conversion content actually gets out there, converting people and is seen and hopefully converting people into paying clients.

Conclusion

So as you can see here, there are many different layers. Figure out right now, maybe one piece of type of content that you’re going to focus on for this week or a couple of them. And what can you do to, again, work with your hooks or work with the watch time or the format so they are watching it all the way through. And what type of call to action might you have? Or if you’re looking at your schedule, how might you strategize now growth style content with conversions type of content for where you are for the end of your year strategy?

And remember, this is a practice. The more that you do it, the better it will get. Remember I say, I find if a reel does well, I know the theme, I’m going to repeat the theme, I’m going to repeat the message. How can I, and I just gonna, so you don’t always have to be recreating things from scratch, you can repurpose it and how would you make it better?

And save this piece of content here because you can come back to it and keep going through all the different layers and all the different strategies. And in fact, share this with a friend who needs some ideas for Instagram and do it together. Hold each other accountable for showing up. I didn’t even get to working through a lot of the mindset today on uncovering why you might feel vulnerable showing up certain ways. But I do have blogs on that in the past. So make sure you head over there.

But sometimes I find like with my client that wasn’t posting at all and all we did was need to get her inspired with different and trying to do it a certain perfect right way on Instagram. She went out there and just started posting a ton of content. In fact, she created 50 reels now that she can post and the client was highlighting in the very beginning of the episode. And her reels have done so much better. So sometimes just knowing and getting ideas going is enough for you to get out there and get consistent.

And of course, if you want personalized feedback from me then you can book your consult and we can do this together each week in the one-to-one business coaching program. And just a reminder, if you’re a client in the months of January and February of 2025 you’ll also get as part of your one-to-one package with me right now, a very special limited time bonus. You’ll get the Instagram Message Makeover Clinic for free.

It’s going to be eight weeks of going through all these different types of format and content and copy that you can post on Instagram so you can grow your audience and sign more online wellness clients. So you can hit those five figure months consistently because I know that you can do it. All my clients, when they come to me the majority of them are barely posting on Instagram or they’re posting inconsistently or if they are posting they don’t have a concrete strategy of that. All my clients end up posting more and getting more visible when they’re implementing this strategy. So you don’t have to go through this alone.

The Instagram Message Makeover Clinic can also be purchased as a standalone. So just make sure you’re on my e-mail list to know when the doors are opening for all of this so you don’t miss out.

Okay, so I know that you can get consults. If I can get consults while I sleep from Instagram then you can do it too. Just go out there and play around with the strategy. You can’t do it wrong. Everything that you post is going to be data and information for the next time you post and eventually one reel is just going to take you by surprise and get a whole bunch more engagement or views or shares or conversions to your surprise. It always catches me by surprise but if you just stick with it you will get surprised, pleasantly surprised by this process.

All right, I’ll see you next week. Bye for now!

How Can You Make More Impact As A Yoga Teacher?

Hi, I'm Dr. Alison McLean, DPT

I believe wellness practitioners deserve to live the freedom they teach.

Not someday. Not after one more certification or one more full caseload. Now. We entered this work to help people heal — and somewhere along the way, we became the most burned out people in the room. Seeing clients back to back, skipping meals, missing family moments, quietly wondering if this is as good as it gets. What they didn't teach us in school is that the business model we inherited was never designed to give us freedom. It was designed to keep us busy. There's a version of your practice that doesn't require your sacrifice as the cost of admission. One where your income isn't capped by your calendar, your clients get your best, and you actually have a life outside the treatment room.

That's the world I'm building — and I'd love to help you build it too.
