When Everything Goes Wrong in Front of Your Audience
You’re live. Your audience is watching. And then it happens—the mistake you’ll replay in your mind for the next 48 hours.
Maybe your audio cuts out during a paid class. Maybe a piece of content lands wrong and someone messages you about it. Maybe you push too hard on a consultation call and watch a potential client slip away.
Here’s what most wellness entrepreneurs do: Hide. Disappear. Wait until they have something “perfect” to share again.
Here’s what you should do instead: Use the failure as proof that you can handle pressure, regulate your nervous system, and solve problems—exactly what your ideal clients need to see.
Today I’m sharing my Regulated Resilience Strategy—a simple framework to process public mistakes, rebuild trust with your audience, and actually strengthen your authority. Because here’s the truth: your ability to handle challenges doesn’t disqualify you. It makes you the perfect person to guide others through their own struggles.
My Recent Public Fail (And What I Did About It)
I just finished teaching my monthly Manifest and Move class—a somatic yoga and meditation session I’ve taught dozens of times. This time, I skipped my usual audio check with students. My AirPods weren’t connected to Zoom, and the music I was sharing through Spotify completely overpowered my voice.
I didn’t realize until the very end when someone commented in the chat that they couldn’t hear me.
Immediately, I felt shame, disappointment, and frustration. These people paid for this class. They invested their time. I let them down.
But instead of spiraling or hiding, I used the exact process I’m about to teach you.
Why Sharing Your Mistakes Actually Builds Authority
Before we dive into the strategy, let’s address the elephant in the room: Won’t sharing mistakes make me look unprofessional?
Short answer: No. Hiding them will.
Think about it this way—you’re going to make mistakes regardless. Every entrepreneur does. The question isn’t if you’ll mess up, but how you’ll handle it.
When you share how you navigate challenges, you’re proving three critical things to potential clients:
- You practice what you preach. If you teach stress reduction or nervous system regulation, showing your own process demonstrates mastery.
- You’re relatable. People don’t hire perfect practitioners. They hire people who understand their struggles.
- You can hold space for their messiness. If you can’t handle your own mistakes with grace, how will you handle theirs?
This is especially powerful if you’re building a sustainable wellness business that doesn’t lead to burnout. When clients struggle with consistency or have a bad week, they’ll remember how you handled your own challenges.
The Regulated Resilience Strategy: 5 Steps to Turn Failures Into Growth
This framework helps you process mistakes, rebuild trust, and extract valuable lessons—without getting stuck in shame or people-pleasing mode.
Step 1: Identify What Went Wrong
Get specific about the actual problem. Not the story you’re telling yourself about it, but the concrete facts.
My example: I didn’t check my audio setup. I didn’t verify with students that they could hear me clearly. The music-to-voice ratio was off.
Your turn: Was it unclear messaging in a post? Pushing too hard in a sales conversation? Technical issues? Name it clearly.
Step 2: Pause and Feel What You’re Feeling
This is the step most entrepreneurs skip—and it’s the most important one.
Before you jump into fix-it mode, regulate your nervous system first. Otherwise, you’ll make decisions from panic, shame, or people-pleasing rather than clarity.
Here’s what I did after my audio fail:
- Got up and walked outside (movement helps process emotions)
- Did some tapping (EFT)
- Took deep breaths
- Messaged a friend who attended for honest feedback
- Named what I was feeling: embarrassed, frustrated, disappointed, worried
Other regulation tools you can use:
- Journaling
- Somatic practices or yoga
- Talking to a trusted friend or coach
- Using ChatGPT as a processing tool
- Worst-case scenario exercise (often reveals the fear isn’t as bad as you think)
The goal isn’t to eliminate the feeling. It’s to acknowledge it, feel it, and let it move through so you can think clearly about what comes next.
If you’re someone who teaches nervous system regulation or stress management to clients, this is where you get to practice what you preach—and potentially share that process with your audience later.
Step 3: Pivot—Take Immediate Action to Course-Correct
Once you’re regulated, decide what action will rebuild trust and make things right for the people affected.
My immediate actions:
- Offered a free code to anyone who had difficulty hearing so they could attend next month’s class
- Attempted to get a transcription of the class through my VA (even though the audio was poor) so students could follow along with the movements and messaging
- Sent a summary email with the month’s theme, journaling prompts, and meditation questions so they could still benefit from their investment
Your pivot might look like:
- Posting a follow-up clarification if content landed wrong
- Reaching out personally to someone who felt hurt or misunderstood
- Offering a make-good for a service that didn’t meet expectations
- Removing or editing content that crossed a line
The key is taking action from a grounded place, not from frantic hustling or over-apologizing.
Step 4: Progress—Implement Systems to Prevent It Next Time
What will you do differently going forward?
My future protocol:
- Always check that AirPods are connected through Zoom
- Do an audio check with students before every class (my usual practice I skipped this time)
- Remind students they can unmute anytime if they can’t hear me
Your progress step might include:
- Running controversial content by a trusted peer before posting
- Creating a consultation call framework to stay aligned during sales conversations
- Building in buffer time between commitments to avoid overextending yourself
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about iteration and improvement.
Step 5: Promise—Communicate How This Makes You Better
This step is optional, but powerful. If it feels aligned, share your mistake and what you learned with your audience.
Why this works:
- It deepens connection and builds trust
- It shows your emotional intelligence in action
- It gives your audience permission to be human too
- It provides real-life examples of the nervous system tools you teach
I shared my audio fail story on my podcast (which you’re reading now as a blog post) because I want you to know that showing up boldly means you’ll sometimes fail publicly—and that’s okay. Actually, it’s more than okay. It’s necessary.
When wellness entrepreneurs hide every time something goes sideways, they miss opportunities to demonstrate the exact resilience and emotional regulation their clients need to develop.
What Shifts When You Embrace This Process
When you start using the Regulated Resilience Strategy consistently, here’s what changes:
✅ Content creation becomes easier. You have real examples of your own tools in action to share with your audience.
✅ Engagement increases. People see you practicing what you preach, not just talking theory.
✅ You attract better-fit clients. You’ll draw in people who value authenticity and emotional mastery over perfection.
✅ Consultation calls feel more confident. You’ve proven to yourself that you can handle discomfort and uncertainty. If consultation calls have been a sticking point for you, this guide on leading successful consultation calls breaks down how to navigate them with authenticity instead of pressure.
✅ You become the go-to practitioner for stressed, overwhelmed clients who need someone who understands the messy middle of transformation.
✅ You can charge premium rates because nervous system mastery equals unshakeable leadership.
✅ Your waitlist fills with people who trust your ability to hold space for their challenges without judgment.
The wellness industry is full of practitioners who only show their wins. Your ability to handle challenges professionally isn’t just a marketing strategy—it’s a competitive advantage.
The Hero’s Journey Isn’t About Being Perfect
Right now, personal stories and authentic connection matter more than ever. People are exhausted by highlight reels and perfection. They want to work with someone who gets it.
When you share your regulated response to a challenge, you’re not just being vulnerable. You’re demonstrating:
- Problem-solving skills in real time
- Emotional intelligence under pressure
- The exact tools and mindset your clients need to develop
This is how you position yourself as both relatable and an authority. You’re not hiding behind credentials or pretending you never struggle. You’re showing what’s possible when someone has the right tools and practices.
If you’re struggling to stand out in a saturated wellness market, this is your edge. Not more certifications. Not a bigger audience. Your willingness to show up as a whole human who navigates challenges with grace.
And if you’re wondering how to actually translate your hands-on healing skills into a profitable online business without losing authenticity, this article on creating a legitimate online wellness business walks through the exact steps to get started.
Your Challenge This Week
Choose one of these two options:
Option 1: Think of a recent mistake or challenge in your business. Run it through the Regulated Resilience Strategy (identify, pause, pivot, progress, promise). Journal through each step and notice how you feel compared to how you’ve processed challenges in the past.
Option 2: Share a piece of content about a mistake you’ve made and what you learned. Use the framework above to structure it. Notice the responses you get.
Then tag me on Instagram @igniteurwellnessbusiness or send me a message. I’d love to hear how this lands for you.
